New food spot in Guiyang Century City: 68 RMB

📍 Xu Ji Zhazuo Sour Pickled Pork Knuckle Hotpot (Century City Branch)

This little restaurant is hidden in a residential area near Century City, surrounded by neighborhoods like Longcheng Garden, Longquan Garden East, and Longci Garden.

The whole street is full of small local eateries.

The shop itself is tiny — only about four tables.

It’s a classic family-run place.

The husband and wife work in the kitchen while their kid plays around in the shop.

The vibe feels very local and neighborhood-style — simple, cozy, and down-to-earth.

--

🐷 Signature dish: Zhazuo sour pickled pork knuckle hotpot

The classic set is Zhazuo sour pickled pork knuckle with beans.

One pot is about 500g of pork knuckle, and you can choose whether to add beans or not.

The pork knuckle is cut into chunks — some lean, some fatty, some with skin, and some perfectly mixed. Everything is already braised until soft and tender.

The base of the pot includes sour pickled vegetables, which give the broth a nice tangy flavor, though the overall seasoning leans a little salty.

--

🌶️ The self-serve sauce bar is the real highlight

All the dipping sauces and vegetables are self-serve.

The veggies we got included tofu skin, bean sprouts, Chinese lettuce stems, and baby bok choy.

But in Guizhou hotpot, the real soul is always the dipping sauce.

My go-to combo:

➤Chili powder

➤Fresh bird’s eye chili

➤Fermented chili sauce

➤Litsea cubeba oil (must add!)

➤Fish mint (houttuynia) if you like it

➤Scallions and Sichuan pepper

--

💰 Portion & value

The whole pot costs 68 RMB.

For two people with normal appetites, it’s definitely enough and very filling.

But if you’re two big guys or serious gym eaters, you might want to add another portion of pork knuckle

(about 35 RMB per 500g).

--

📖 Final thoughts

Honestly, the flavor isn’t the kind that instantly blows you away.

But it feels like homemade food — similar to the sour pickled pork knuckle hotpot families cook at home in Guizhou.

Simple, comforting, and perfect for a casual meal.

Sometimes those neighborhood spots are exactly what you need.

Guiyang
3/8 Edited to

... Read moreWhile my recent find, Xu Ji Zhazuo's sour pickled pork knuckle hotpot, was an absolute treat, it genuinely opened my eyes to the incredible depth of Guiyang's food culture. If you're searching for 'Guiyang food,' you're truly in for a culinary adventure defined by its unique sour and spicy flavors. Guiyang cuisine, often dubbed 'Suan La' (酸辣), meaning sour and spicy, is a cornerstone of Guizhou's gastronomic identity. This distinctive profile isn't just a preference; it's deeply rooted in the region's climate and agricultural bounty. The humidity often makes people crave invigorating, flavorful dishes, and sourness, often derived from fermented vegetables like the 'sour pickled vegetable' in the hotpot, or various wild peppers and rice vinegars, becomes a natural and refreshing counterpoint to the heat. The sour pickled pork knuckle hotpot perfectly exemplifies this balance, offering a comforting warmth with a tangy kick that awakens the palate. Beyond just the main ingredients, the hotpot experience in Guiyang is elevated by its interactive nature. The self-serve 'dipping sauce' bar, which I highlighted in my original post, is absolutely crucial. It’s where you become the chef, customizing your perfect accompaniment. While my go-to combo includes chili powder, bird's eye chili, and that essential Litsea cubeba oil, I've seen locals concocting fantastic blends with minced garlic, fresh cilantro, a splash of soy sauce, and even a touch of sesame oil. Don't be shy; experiment until you find your ideal mix! And remember to try adding various ingredients to your hotpot, beyond just the pork knuckle – thin slices of meat, different types of 'tofu skin,' mushrooms, and fresh greens like 'lettuce' and 'bean sprouts' are all popular choices. But Guiyang's culinary scene extends far beyond hotpot. For those eager to explore more 'Guiyang food,' here are a couple of other iconic dishes you absolutely must try: Siwawa (丝娃娃): Often translated as 'Silk Love' or 'Wrapped Babies,' this dish is a refreshing contrast to the richness of hotpot. You wrap an assortment of shredded vegetables (think carrots, cucumbers, radishes) in thin rice crepes, then douse them in a sour and spicy dipping sauce. It's light, flavorful, and incredibly fun to assemble. Changwangmian (肠旺面): This hearty noodle dish is a local favorite, especially for breakfast or lunch. It features springy noodles topped with crispy pig intestines, congealed pig blood (don't knock it till you try it!), crispy pork cracklings, and a rich, savory broth. It's an adventurous yet deeply satisfying bowl that showcases Guiyang's boldness. Finding these authentic local spots, much like the 'Xu Ji Zhazuo' hotpot place in 'Guiyang Century City,' is part of the adventure. My advice? Look for establishments that are bustling with locals, often tucked away in residential areas. Don't be deterred by simple decor; these 'family-run' spots are often where you'll find the most authentic, time-tested recipes and incredible value. That '¥68' price point for a substantial meal is a common marker of these genuine neighborhood gems. Ultimately, discovering Guiyang's food scene is about more than just tasting new dishes; it's about immersing yourself in the local culture, experiencing the warmth of its people, and enjoying unpretentious, soul-satisfying meals. So, next time your search leans towards 'Guiyang food,' be prepared to dive into a world of vibrant flavors and unforgettable dining experiences!
