managing a restaurant is easier than working as FOH or BOH staff ##unpopularopinion##serviceindustry##hospitalitymanagement##restaurantlife##managerlife
Having spent several years working both front-of-house (FOH) and back-of-house (BOH) in various restaurants before moving into management, I’ve come to see why managing a restaurant can feel easier in certain ways. The FOH roles—like waitstaff or hosts—are the face of the restaurant, constantly dealing with customer needs, complaints, and the fast pace of service. The pressure to deliver great guest experiences alongside handling multiple simultaneous tasks can be intense and draining. Similarly, working BOH - in the kitchen or as prep staff - demands long hours on your feet, physical labor, and keeping up with the stress of timely food preparation without sacrificing quality. The work is repetitive, hot, and often exhausting, especially during peak hours. When you move into a management role, although the responsibility increases, you shift from executing tasks to overseeing operations. This means you can plan ahead, coordinate schedules, and set priorities rather than engaging in nonstop physical work. You're also able to leverage communication and leadership skills to solve problems proactively, rather than reacting continuously on the frontlines. Of course, management has its own challenges: handling conflicts, staffing issues, inventory control, and ensuring smooth service. But the ability to influence the overall workflow and bring improvements can provide a sense of control that frontline roles often lack. Ultimately, whether management feels easier may depend on your strengths—some thrive in dynamic hands-on roles, others excel in strategy and coordination. For anyone considering a hospitality career path, understanding the nuances between FOH, BOH, and management roles can help set realistic expectations and guide growth. Having firsthand experience at each level can also make a manager more empathetic and effective in supporting their teams.
