Today I got laid off from my job at Complex. Some of you may know me from my intro, “What’s popping it’s your girl Mami Tiff with Complex News.”
I first and foremost am extremely grateful and thankful for this past year and three months. I had the amazing opportunity to interview so many amazing talent, meet some the the business best publicists, managers, and more. What I will miss the most is getting to laugh and grind with my fellow coworkers.
I met so many amazing creatives who held me down, spoke up for me in rooms I wasn’t in, was ready to help me when I was in need, and always celebrated me.
I am proud to say my time there was not wasted, I went in there with a force and never looked back. That being said I know God always has a plan for me, and what ever is next, must be bigger!
With Love,
Mami Tiff 🩷
Losing a job, especially unexpectedly, can be a challenging experience, but it also opens doors to new opportunities and personal growth. I remember when I was laid off from a role I cherished; initially, it felt like the end of the world. However, much like Mami Tiff, I found that reflecting on the positive experiences—such as the friendships formed, the skills gained, and the moments of joy—helped me regain confidence. One key aspect I relate to is the power of the community around us. Mami highlighted how her creative peers supported and celebrated her, even in rooms she wasn't present in. From my experience, building and maintaining those networks proved invaluable during my transition period. Reaching out to former colleagues, mentors, and even acquaintances on platforms like LinkedIn or industry forums can provide unexpected leads and emotional encouragement. Moreover, embracing a mindset of gratitude, as Mami Tiff does, shifts focus from loss to potential. This attitude helped me approach job searching not just as a need, but as a chance to find a position aligned with my evolving aspirations. It’s important to remember that being laid off is often a business decision, not a reflection of your worth. In addition, using this time to upskill or explore new interests can greatly enhance your resume and self-esteem. For example, attending workshops, online courses, or even engaging in side projects related to your field can demonstrate initiative and dedication to future employers. Finally, staying optimistic and trusting that ‘what’s next must be bigger’ is a powerful mindset. Many professionals have found that unexpected career shifts ultimately lead to more fulfilling roles or new industries altogether. Sharing your story openly, as Mami has done, can also inspire those undergoing similar experiences and foster meaningful connections. Remember, being open to new opportunities and nurturing your support system are key steps to turning the page after a layoff.
