Laparoscopic Myomectomy Surgery

A laparoscopic myomectomy is a minimally invasive procedure used to remove uterine fibroids. It involves making a small incision in or near the belly button and inserting a small, lighted telescope called a laparoscope. I underwent this procedure on March 27th, 2022. Prior to the surgery, during the summer and fall of 2022, I was experiencing extreme pain and was taking about six Tylenol tablets every night just to sleep. So, I decided to bite the bullet and have the surgery.

I was extremely emotional about this surgery. The idea of someone cutting into my womb increased my anxiety, and I cried many nights leading up to it. This was mainly because I have not yet had children (still undecided) and I was worried that if something went wrong during the surgery, it could prevent that from ever happening. I would have been devastated. However, a part of my decision to have this surgery was to preserve my fertility, so I set those fears aside and went through with the surgery. I'm so glad I did.

And while I am happy with my decision thus far it does come with some cons.

👍Pros:

Not in pain anymore.

No longer bloated 🤰🏽

No constipated anymore

Fertility preservation

🤔Cons:

Will have to have a c-section when I do I have kids. Because of where my fibroids were located I could risk rupturing an incision if I have kids vaginally.

Possibly scar tissue. Scar Tissue can develop from any surgery. This can negatively affect fertility. However scar tissue depends on surgery technique. Make sure you go to a skilled surgeon!

They can grow back. Fibroids form because of your body’s inability to get rid of excess estrogen properly. If you’re still in your child bearing years and your body is still producing these excess amounts of estrogen fibroids can form again.

What Need for surgery:

Heating pad

Mild laxative and stool softener

Pain medication from your doctor

2 weeks home to heal

Sleep!

My recovery was quicker because I had it done Laparoscopically. Some women stay home from work for a month.

Have they grown back?

As of October 2024, yes unfortunately I have 5 outside of my uterus.

Surgeon:

Dr. Ulas Bozdogen NYC/NJ

He was great and called several times to check on me after surgery.

... Read moreLaparoscopic myomectomy is gaining popularity as a minimally invasive solution for those suffering from uterine fibroids. This technique uses small incisions to reduce recovery time and related pain. Many patients report significant improvements, including the elimination of debilitating symptoms such as pain and bloating. However, it's crucial to be informed about the pros and cons. Patients may need a c-section for future pregnancies due to surgical complexities, and fibroids can recur if hormonal imbalances persist. Additionally, choosing a skilled surgeon is vital, as this can influence outcomes and the possibility of scar tissue forming and affecting future fertility. Research shows that recovery from laparoscopic surgery is generally quicker than traditional methods, allowing many individuals to return to their daily routines sooner. It’s important to have realistic expectations and to prepare adequately for the recovery process, which typically includes rest, pain management, and follow-ups with healthcare providers. Ultimately, understanding the procedure, recovery expectations, and long-term implications is essential for those considering laparoscopic myomectomy.
