3 Steps I Take When Spirals Hit 🤌

Spirals don’t end because someone says “calm down.”

Here’s what actually helps me:

1️⃣ Name it out loud. Spirals feed on confusion. Naming the fear gives it shape.

2️⃣ Ask: Is this mine? Half the time, I’m carrying energy that isn’t mine — guilt, pressure, or someone else’s mood.

3️⃣ Put it on paper. Thoughts loop until they land somewhere. Writing stops the cycle.

❣️The point isn’t to erase the spiral. It’s to stop letting it drag you in circles.

✨ If you’ve been spiraling, try one of these today — and notice the shift.

... Read moreWhen spirals hit, they often trap us in loops of anxiety and confusion that can feel overwhelming. The steps outlined here—naming it out loud, asking if the feelings belong to you, and writing them down—are powerful tools rooted in mindfulness and cognitive-behavioral techniques. Naming the spiral helps by bringing unclear emotions into focus. When spirals feed on confusion, defining the fear or anxiety gives it a tangible form, making it easier to address. Speaking these feelings aloud can reduce their intensity and prevent them from becoming an overwhelming cloud in your mind. The second step, asking "Is this mine?" encourages self-reflection and boundary-setting. Many of us carry emotional baggage that isn’t ours—whether guilt, pressure, or moods from others. Identifying whether these feelings are truly yours helps you detach from unnecessary emotional weight, which is a vital skill in emotional regulation and mental well-being. Writing thoughts down complements these techniques by providing a physical outlet. Our minds often loop thoughts without resolution, and putting them on paper anchors these thoughts, making them easier to analyze and eventually release. Journaling or simply jotting down your anxieties can help break the continuous cycle of worry and improve clarity. Together, these steps help you pause the cycle, reducing the time spent spiraling and increasing your ability to respond thoughtfully rather than react impulsively. While the goal is not to erase spirals completely—which is unrealistic—but to stop their destructive momentum, these methods can be integrated into daily mental wellness practices. For those on a healing journey or seeking mental clarity, adopting these steps can enhance your ability to manage emotions effectively. Consistent practice can also foster deeper self-awareness and resilience, essential components of long-term mental health. So, next time spirals hit, try naming the feeling, questioning its ownership, and writing it out to notice a real shift in your mental space and emotional wellbeing.
