John Wayne Casserole 🤠
I seen this floating around and it looked good and easy! Hardest thing was spreading the ranch mixture haha
Ingredients🍋
1lb ground beef
Green Pepper
Red Pepper
Onion
1 packet of taco seasoning
1 packet of ranch seasoning
1 can of biscuits(I used flakey Pillsbury)
1 can Rotel Tomato & Green Chilis(I only used half a can)
1 cup Mayo
1 cup Sour Cream
4 Oz Cream Cheese
Cheddar Cheese
Sargento Red Pepper Cheese(I only used half the bag cause I'm weak gened to spice)
-Brown your meat with seasoning, if you like extra ranch add some seasoning in here too; and add peppers and onions. (I used Kinders Steakhouse, Pepper, Smoked Paprika, Garlic Powder, Taco seasoning and 1/2 pack of ranch)
-Preheat oven to 350
-Mix together the cream cheese, mayo, sour cream and 1 full packet of ranch. Sit to side.
- Butter(or spray) your casserole dish
-Pat down biscuits in bottom of dish
-Put meat mixture in first then the can of tomatoes & green chili's (I forgot and had to do mine after the ranch mixture)
- Take ranch mixture and spread over top of meat layer. (i struggled here ngl lol)
-Slap as much cheese as you like on top of that bad boy. I was going to add sliced jalapeño but forgot to buy some.
-Bake for 20 mins, this may vary I use gas and my stove is old so my stove gets really hot.(I saw someone say to prebake the biscuits for 5 mins but I forgot to try that, but that sounds smart!)
-Broil for a minute or two to get the top nice and crunchy
And your done! 🤠🤠 Let me know if you make it and if you add/subtract anything!👀
I've seen so many people raving about the John Wayne Casserole online, and for good reason! It’s one of those comforting, hearty meals that just hits the spot, especially when you need something that’s both easy and tasty. While the exact "original" recipe can be a bit of a culinary legend, most versions, like the one I made, capture the essence of what makes this dish so beloved: simple ingredients, big flavors, and a satisfying outcome. The story goes that John Wayne himself enjoyed a casserole featuring ground beef, tomatoes, and a cheesy, creamy topping, possibly even with biscuits. Whether he cooked it himself or it was a favorite dish prepared for him, the spirit of the 'Duke's' hearty, no-nonsense lifestyle lives on in this casserole. My take on it perfectly embodies that spirit, focusing on straightforward steps and ingredients you likely already have. One thing I found challenging was spreading that creamy ranch mixture – it can be a bit stubborn! A little trick I learned is to let your cream cheese soften to room temperature completely, and if the mixture still feels too stiff, you can warm it gently for a few seconds in the microwave (but be careful not to cook it!). Another tip that helps is to use a spatula dipped in warm water; it makes spreading much smoother. And for those who, like me, are aiming for a slightly crispier biscuit base, pre-baking the biscuits for about 5 minutes before adding the meat layer can make a huge difference. It creates a lovely, golden crust that holds up better to all the delicious toppings. This casserole is also incredibly versatile, which is why I love it! Want to make it even spicier? Don't hold back on the Sargento Red Pepper Cheese, or add some diced jalapeños right into the meat mixture. If you prefer it milder, any good cheddar or Monterey Jack cheese works wonderfully. I sometimes swap out half the ground beef for ground turkey to lighten it up a bit, or throw in a can of drained black beans with the Rotel for extra fiber and flavor. You can also sneak in more veggies like diced zucchini or corn during the meat browning stage. It’s all about making it your own! Preparing parts of this casserole ahead of time can be a lifesaver on busy weeknights. You can brown the ground beef mixture with the peppers and onions, let it cool, and store it in the fridge for a day or two. Then, when dinner time rolls around, all you have to do is assemble and bake. It cuts down on active cooking time significantly. When it comes to serving, this hearty John Wayne Casserole is pretty much a meal in itself. But if you want to round it out, a simple green salad with a light vinaigrette or a side of steamed corn would be perfect. And don’t worry about leftovers! This casserole reheats beautifully. Just pop a slice in the microwave or cover it loosely with foil and warm it in the oven until heated through. It’s still wonderfully tasty the next day, making it great for meal prep. So, if you're looking for an easy and tasty dinner that feeds a crowd and has a bit of a legendary backstory, give this John Wayne Casserole a try. It’s definitely earned its spot as a family favorite in my house!
