What truly elevates a bulgur and fish dish for me is embracing the inspired flavors often found in Haitian cooking. While my version might not be traditional 'bulgur ak aranso' (bulgur with smoked herring), I love infusing it with vibrant spices like thyme, garlic, and a hint of scotch bonnet pepper for that authentic Caribbean warmth. It’s not just a grain; it becomes a flavorful canvas for whatever protein you choose! Imagine tender flakes of white fish mingling with perfectly cooked bulgur, absorbing all those aromatic spices—it’s pure comfort. Often, I get asked about bulgur versus quinoa. Both are fantastic, but they offer different experiences. Bulgur, being a par-boiled, cracked wheat, has a slightly chewier texture and a mild, nutty flavor that I find pairs wonderfully with savory dishes like this fish recipe. Quinoa, on the other hand, is a complete protein and has a fluffier texture, often used in salads or as a lighter side. Nutritionally, both are powerhouses!
