my controversial study hack…

People get so mad when I do this, but it works for me!

The biggest thing is. I pay for my books and I am getting my PhD so I need to keep them for a long time, thus am not interested in selling them!!

I know this is why most people do not highlight their text books because it makes them harder to sell letter. And you can just get a pdf version then highlight on whatever viewing platforms you have if that works better for you. Personally, I do not do as well reading off my iPad.

I always try to buy used books since I do mark them up. But it’s really has been super helpful for me. I review really well from reading over text books as it helps explain the WHY of things, which is what I need. But reading is something I struggle with as I get distracted, so this is what I do that works for me.

It’s all about finding what works for you 💕

... Read moreHighlighting textbooks has often sparked debate among students, especially because many avoid it to preserve resale value. However, this method can be hugely beneficial when tailored to your personal learning style. For those pursuing advanced degrees like a PhD, owning textbooks and engaging actively with them through marking and highlighting can deepen comprehension and retention. This hands-on approach helps in connecting complex concepts, such as those found in physics and quantum mechanics, by visually segmenting important information, which otherwise may get lost during intensive reading. Research suggests that active reading strategies, including highlighting key ideas and writing marginal notes, encourage deeper processing of the material. This can make it easier to synthesize difficult theories, such as wave functions and probability amplitudes, by emphasizing the "why" behind concepts instead of just memorizing facts. For readers who struggle with distractions, as the author describes, physically interacting with a paper textbook offers a tactile advantage over digital formats like PDFs or iPads. Additionally, purchasing used textbooks is a smart choice for budget-conscious learners who want to personalize study materials without concern for resale value. While some students prefer digital highlighting tools for convenience, many find that the physical act of writing and highlighting enhances memory and focus. This is especially true for complex subjects where multiple variables and equations, like orthogonal operators or eigenvalues, require frequent revisiting and cross-referencing. Ultimately, the key takeaway is that study methods are not one-size-fits-all. Finding what works for you—whether it’s highlighting physical books, annotating PDFs, or taking notes—is essential for effective learning. For students who aim to truly understand and retain their material, embracing strategies that encourage active engagement and reviewing text repeatedly can make a profound difference in academic success. If you're hesitant about marking up your textbooks, consider that investing in used editions or editions you plan to keep long-term can reduce any downside. Embrace your unique study habits and focus on techniques that help you grasp the underlying principles of your coursework, turning challenging material into manageable, memorable knowledge.

i’ve been looking a lot into banned and challenged books and what that exactly means. when a book is banned, that means that it has been removed from a collection (something like a library or state) due to a challenge to its content, morals, or themes. have any of you read any of these? what did
