This tofu stays crispy + flavorful 🙌
this is my go-to airfryer tofu recipe, complete with a simple sauce that's a lil spicy, a lil sweet 🔥 if you don't have an airfryer, just bake at the same temps and times (but i do recommend airfryer for this!!)
ingredients:
• 1 lb block of tofu, pressed for 30 min and cubed
• 1 tbsp tapioca, arrowroot, or corn starch
• 1 tbsp coconut aminos or soy sauce
• 1 tsp salt
1/2 tsp black pepper
• 1 tsp garlic powder
• 1 tsp smoked paprika
• 1 tsp ground ginger
• 1/2 tsp onion powder
• 1 tbsp olive or avocado oil
for the sauce:
• 2 tbsp sriracha
• 2 tbsp coconut aminos or soy sauce
• 2 tbsp sesame oil
• 2 tbsp rice vinegar
• 1 tbsp maple syrup
•1 tsp ginger
• 1 tbsp sesame seeds (optional)
• salt & pepper to taste
start by coating the cubed tofu in the starch, spices, and coconut aminos & airfy on 400 for 10 mins, giving it a shake halfway through. meanwhile, make the sauce by combining all ingredients in a jar and shaking.
cover the tofu in the sauce (save a little for topping it you'd like), then airfry again on 40 for 5-7 minutes, until crisp. enjoy immediately or store in the refrigerator up to 5 days.
Many tofu lovers and even tofu skeptics can rejoice with recipes like this that truly bring out the best in tofu's texture and flavor. The use of starch (tapioca, arrowroot, or corn starch) is key to achieving that iconic crispy crust when air frying or baking tofu. Pressing the tofu to remove excess moisture before seasoning also ensures it crisps up nicely rather than steaming or turning soggy. The sauce combines a balance of spicy heat from sriracha, sweetness from maple syrup, and savory notes from coconut aminos or soy sauce. Sesame oil and rice vinegar add depth and a hint of nuttiness and tang. This magic sauce not only complements the crunchy tofu but also infuses each bite with bold flavor. For those without an airfryer, baking at similar temperature and timing works well; turning the tofu halfway ensures even crisping. The final airfry step coating tofu in sauce helps caramelize the glaze, providing a sticky, crave-worthy finish. Refrigerated leftovers keep well for up to 5 days, making it an excellent prep-ahead option. Several cooks swear this is "the recipe that made me love tofu," a sentiment echoed by many who once dismissed it as bland or mushy. With this approach, tofu transforms into a satisfying main or side dish that pairs wonderfully with rice, stir-fried veggies, or as a protein-packed salad topper. Try experimenting by adjusting spice levels or swapping maple syrup for honey or agave to suit your taste. Adding toasted sesame seeds as a garnish introduces an extra layer of texture and visual appeal. Whether you’re a vegan, vegetarian, or just looking for a healthier protein alternative, mastering a crispy tofu recipe like this one will boost your meal variety and enjoyment markedly.
