Grad school didn’t fully prepare you to be a therapist.

It taught you theory, ethics, and (maybeee) how to write a treatment plan.

And if you’ve ever:

• replayed a session in your head for hours

• compared yourself to other therapists

• wondered if you’re behind

• Googled endlessly for answers

• felt isolated in this work

I built this for you.

... Read moreStarting as a therapist can be surprisingly challenging, especially when your graduate program focused more on theory and less on real-world application. Many new therapists share the experience of replaying client sessions in their mind, questioning their progress, and feeling isolated despite being passionate about their work. It’s normal to feel this way, and acknowledging it is the first step toward growth. What helped me transition was joining a community that emphasized learning through connection and shared experience. Engaging with fellow therapists allowed me to see that many questions I had were common, and together we could find practical solutions. This community aspect helped reduce the feeling of going it alone, which is crucial for mental health professionals who often work in solitary environments. Additionally, continuing education outside formal schooling helped me develop skills in areas grad school overlooked—like self-care as a clinician, managing ethical dilemmas in diverse settings, and fine-tuning treatment planning with client feedback. I found that growth happens through a combination of self-reflection, peer support, and ongoing learning. If you find yourself endlessly Googling answers or comparing yourself to others, consider that these feelings indicate a readiness to deepen your professional development. Embracing opportunities to learn and connect within a supportive network not only enhances your skills but also nurtures resilience, making you a more effective, confident therapist. Remember, therapy is a journey, and you don’t have to figure it out alone.
