I was someone who didn’t often have migraines growing up, but as I entered my late 20s, it started to become a common thing, especially after working in front of my computer all day. To prevent that, I made some lifestyle changes and added products that improved my situation with migraines. Here are a few things I have added and love to keep at my desk when I work.
01. Blue Light Glassess
There are a certain type of glasses you can wear that can help lessen the damaging effects from staring at the screen all day. These are called blue light glasses and look just like regular glasses. Some places that offer prescription glasses can also add a blue light filter to them. They help in blocking and absorbing blue light from the screen and in turn, lessen migraines from constantly staring at the screen.
02. Stretching
When my body is in the same position for hours on end, it can give me a headache. I make sure to get up and stretch when I can. Since I work from home, it is easy for me to get away from my desk and stretch on a yoga mat. However, in an office setting, I suggest taking a quick stroll around or outside the office if you can.
03. Taking Frequent Breaks
I’m guilty of staying at my desk for hours when I work, especially when I have a big project due. As I continued to do this, my migraines got worse. Now, I make it a priority to intentionally take breaks and step away from the computer. This has helped me so much.
... Read moreIt’s incredible how much working from a desk, especially in a home office, can impact our body. Before I figured out my migraine triggers, I often ended my workday with a throbbing headache, feeling completely drained. I realized it wasn't just about the screen time, but a combination of factors related to my home office setup and habits.
Beyond just wearing blue light glasses, which were a huge first step for me in cutting down eye strain, I've learned to be more intentional. When I first got my glasses, I thought I was all set. But while they definitely helped filter out the harsh blue light, I still found myself squinting or feeling fatigued after long hours. I started researching more about digital eye strain and realized consistent eye breaks are just as crucial. Every 20 minutes, I try to look away from my laptop screen at something 20 feet away for 20 seconds. Sometimes, I'll even peek out my window for a moment of natural light and a distraction from the screen glow.
Stretching became another non-negotiable part of my day. It's easy to get absorbed in work and forget about movement, but prolonged sitting is a major culprit for not just headaches but also neck pain and shoulder tension, which can easily trigger a migraine. I don't always roll out my pink yoga mat for a full session, but simple stretches right at my desk make a world of difference. I focus on gentle neck rolls, shoulder shrugs, and reaching my arms overhead. Sometimes, I even use a small yoga block or a rolled-up towel to support my lower back, which helps maintain better posture and prevents tension from building up. If I have a few extra minutes, a quick set of bicep curls with light dumbbells helps get the blood flowing.
And those frequent breaks? They are more than just stepping away. For me, it's about truly disconnecting. Instead of just grabbing another coffee and returning to my desk, I make sure to do something completely different. I might step outside for a breath of fresh air, walk around my yard, or simply hydrate with a tall glass of water. Looking at the city skyline from my balcony, or just observing people on the street view below, gives my mind a much-needed reset. I've also found that keeping my home office setup organized, with clear shelves and minimal clutter, helps reduce underlying stress that can contribute to tension headaches. Even adding a small green plant to my desk has a calming effect, providing a natural focal point for my eyes.
Remember, preventing migraines while working from home is an ongoing journey. It’s about listening to your body and making small, consistent changes. These habits have transformed my workdays, allowing me to be more productive and, most importantly, pain-free!
