The Bookish Algorithm: How I Source My Reads

I frequently gets asked how and where I do all my reading - and the honest answer is: I’m very intentional with how I obtain and source my books.

Reading can be expensive so here’s how I balance reading widely and being financially responsible.

📖 Hoopla

*Free as long as you connect your library card

*Instant access (no waitlists)

*Can only borrow up to 4 books a month

*21-day borrowing window

*Limited monthly borrows and depends on what your library carries

📖Libby

*Free as long as you connect your library card

*Huge catalog of ebooks and audiobooks

*14-day borrowing window

*Has waitlists and you can put up to 10 books on reserve

*Limited monthly borrows and depends on what your library carries

🎧 Audible

*Anywhere from 1-24 credit options (1 credit = 1 book) [I get the premium package which gives me 12 credits a year. This is always a birthday gift that is usually gifted during the Black Friday season where you can get it cheaper!]

*Access to Audible’s free catalog without using credits

*Credits are expensive so I usually save up my credits for priority reads and new releases

📱Kindle **UPDATE: Kindle App may not be accessible on all non-Kindle devices**

*Great options for binge reads

*Subscription required and an Amazon account is required. The subscription is $12/month but there are deals for new subscribers!

*Many titles include free audible narration

*Easy way to explore new authors/titles

*Not every new release is available on KU right away

This mix allows me to read widely, try new authors, to stay within budget - while supporting libraries and choosing which books I actually want to own. I will buy a physical book if I loved it so much that I want it in my library, and books are often gifted to me as well.

Everyone’s access and budget looks differently, but this is the system that works for me!

How do you source your books??

#bookishalgorithm #booksonabudget #lemmon8books

1/20 Edited to

... Read moreOne of the best parts of sourcing books through platforms like Hoopla and Libby is the ability to support your local library digitally, which is often overlooked but crucial for sustaining library services. Both apps require a library card, so if you don’t have one yet, I highly recommend getting one—it's free and opens up a treasure trove of ebooks and audiobooks without any cost beyond your local tax support. Hoopla’s instant access feature is a game changer. Unlike some other digital library services, you don’t have to wait through long queues to borrow titles, which means you can dive straight into a new read anytime. The limitation of four borrows per month encourages intentional reading choices, pushing me to prioritize books I’m truly excited about. Libby offers a massive collection, which feels almost like having a personalized bookstore with a borrowing function. While waitlists exist, having the option to reserve up to 10 books at once means you can plan your reading queue ahead without missing out on popular titles. The 14-day borrowing window is perfect for quick reads or audiobooks during commutes. Audible, while more of an investment, has its perks. I treat my annual 12-credit package as a birthday gift—often snagged during the Black Friday deals to save money. It’s a luxury for those must-read new releases or audiobooks I want to own permanently. The free Audible catalog also provides a nice supplement for casual listening. Kindle Unlimited is another interesting tool for binge readers. Although it requires a subscription, the $12/month fee often pays off when you dive into multiple books a month. Plus, the inclusion of free Audible narration on many titles adds value, making it easier to switch between reading and listening. Personally, this hybrid approach helps me balance financial prudence and reading diversity. I support libraries by borrowing as much as possible, but when a book truly resonates with me, I don’t hesitate to purchase a physical copy to add to my personal collection. Also, receiving books as gifts adds a lovely personal touch to my library. Balancing budgets and access differs for everyone, but these tools collectively create a reading ecosystem that’s flexible, affordable, and enjoyable. How about you? What’s your favorite way to source books without breaking the bank?
