Using different study methods for similar tasks

Have you tried learning multiple similar things at time and ended up mixing them all up?

This is interference, a concept in psychology that describes when similar information competes in your memory. So, when you try to process multiple new, similar yet ultimately different information all at once, the brain gets confused, details get blurred, and you might just mix up what you just learned.

One solution is to distinguish the learning on different topics. Studying in different locations, environments, schedules, and using different methods can all help. For instance, learning one topic with notes & diagrams, the other with audio or flashcards. By giving your brain different cues, you reduce confusion and actually retain more.

... Read moreFrom personal experience, tackling multiple similar subjects at once can definitely lead to confusion, especially when the study material overlaps but has subtle differences. I found that separating my study sessions not only by topic but also by location and method really helped. For example, I designated the library for topic A and a quiet café for topic B. I also switched the way I engaged with each subject—using detailed diagrams and handwritten notes for one, while opting for audio summaries and flashcards for the other. This variety created distinct mental cues, making it easier to recall information correctly. Additionally, spacing out study sessions rather than trying to learn everything at once prevents cognitive overload. Taking breaks and reviewing previous material before switching topics also solidified my learning. Teaching the concepts aloud to myself or someone else proved helpful too, as verbalizing information created a different learning pathway. These strategies align closely with interference theory in cognitive psychology, which explains that similar memories can compete. By introducing unique retrieval cues—whether through environment, mode of study, or timing—you can reduce interference effects. If you’re struggling with mixing up information, experimenting with these approaches might enhance how you retain and retrieve knowledge, turning a challenging learning process into a more effective and enjoyable one.
