✨Homemade Tortillas✨

✨Homemade Tortillas✨

In a mixer, (I like to use a dough hook, but you can also do this by hand) combine the flour, salt, and baking powder. Next, add the oil and stir. Very slowly add the water. If it is crumbly add a bit more but only use as much as you need until it forms a soft dough.

Hand knead your dough for 1 minute and then divide into 12-14 pieces. Slightly flatten each section and then cover with a damp towel to rest for 30 minutes.

After the rest, shape each tortilla with a tortilla press or rolling them out between 2 pieces of parchment paper. If needed, once rolled, gently pull your tortillas to stretch them even thinner.

On medium/high heat, cook for 30-40 seconds on each side or until it starts to brown and puff a bit. Serve warm.

To store, put in the refrigerator and reheat before serving.

... Read moreMaking homemade tortillas is a rewarding experience that brings a fresh and authentic taste to any meal. One of the key things I've learned when preparing tortillas from scratch is to use warm water gradually during mixing; this helps the dough come together without becoming too sticky or dry. Incorporating olive oil adds a slight richness and helps keep the tortillas soft after cooking. Resting the dough under a damp towel is essential to relax the gluten, making rolling or pressing easier and preventing the tortillas from shrinking back. Using parchment paper to roll them out ensures they don’t stick, and gently stretching the dough after rolling can make your tortillas thinner and lighter, which is perfect for soft tacos or burritos. Cooking on medium-high heat is the sweet spot: it allows the tortillas to cook quickly and puff up with some air pockets, giving them a fluffy texture in spots while maintaining a slight chew. I find that cooking each side for around 30 to 40 seconds achieves this perfectly. Storing homemade tortillas properly also matters. Keep them in an airtight container or wrapped in foil in the refrigerator to maintain freshness. When ready to serve, warming them in a skillet or microwave with a damp paper towel helps regain the softness and pliability. This method uses simple ingredients: 3 cups flour, 1 teaspoon salt, 1 teaspoon baking powder, 1/3 cup olive oil, and 1 cup warm water, which are easy to keep on hand. Whether you’re preparing a quick snack or a complete meal, homemade tortillas add flavor and satisfaction that store-bought ones can’t match. Give it a try and enjoy the process as much as the delicious result!
