✨ 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before Becoming a RDA✨

Becoming a dental assistant is one of the best choices I’ve made — but I won’t lie, there were some things that no one warned me about! 😅 If you’re on the same path, here are 5 things I wish someone had told me before I stepped into my first scrubs:

1. Your Body Will Feel It (Especially Your Feet!)

I didn’t realize how physical this job is! You’re standing, walking, bending, assisting — all day. My advice: Don’t wait to get good sneakers with arch support, compression socks, and maybe even insoles. Your back and feet will thank you later! 👟💆🏽‍♀️

2. Time Moves FAST (and You Have to Move Faster)

Dental assisting is all about being quick and efficient. You’ll have patients back-to-back, and if you’re not managing time right, it can get overwhelming fast. Get in the habit of setting up trays, cleaning rooms, and grabbing X-rays like a pro ⏱💨

3. Every Office Has a Different Vibe

One office might feel calm and supportive. Another might feel chaotic and stressful. Your environment MATTERS. Don’t be afraid to try a few offices before settling. You deserve to feel safe, appreciated, and well-trained! 🧘🏽‍♀️🏢

4. You’ll Need to Advocate for Yourself

When you’re new, it’s easy to just say yes to everything. But boundaries are key! Whether it’s your hours, your pay, or how you’re being trained — SPEAK UP. Know your worth and protect your peace ✨💼

5. Personality Is Everything

Being friendly, calm under pressure, and a team player makes you gold in any office. Dental assisting is a people job — patients trust YOU just as much as the dentist. Let your light shine 💖🦷

🎀 Whether you’re in school or just starting out, know this: the learning curve is real, but you’re not alone.

Save this post for later & tag a future RDA babe who needs to hear this! 💋

... Read moreBecoming a Registered Dental Assistant (RDA) is an exciting and fulfilling career choice, yet it comes with unique challenges that many newcomers may overlook. One crucial aspect is managing your physical health. Investing in quality footwear designed for long hours of standing can alleviate foot and back pain, allowing you to remain focused on your tasks. Additionally, building efficiency in your daily routines is paramount; learning to prioritize tasks like preparing instruments or managing patient schedules can significantly reduce stress. Understanding workplace culture is also vital. Each dental practice has its own dynamics, and finding a supportive environment can enhance your professional development and job satisfaction. Don't hesitate to explore various settings, as a positive atmosphere can profoundly impact your performance and well-being. Self-advocacy is essential in the dental field. New RDAs must feel empowered to communicate their needs regarding workload, salary, and training processes. Knowing your worth can lead to a healthier work-life balance. Furthermore, the role of personality cannot be understated. Building rapport with patients is key; being approachable, calm, and cooperative allows you to foster trust, which is crucial in alleviating patient anxiety during dental procedures. In summary, the journey to becoming a successful RDA involves understanding the physical, emotional, and professional components of the role. Embrace the learning curve and utilize available resources, as you are part of a community that values growth and support.
