My PCOS Story

Ever since I was about 10 or 11 I’ve had psoriasis. I found a dermatologist and had been going to her for years. For years I had noticed I wasn’t getting my periods regular. So when I was 14 my Dermatologist was examining me and she noticed some dark spots on my skin amongst other things. She referred me to an endocrinologist and that’s when I was diagnosed. Back then it wasn’t talked about much. Not really anyone I knew even knew what it was. I lived with my dad at the time. My mom didn’t live with us they were separated. My dad did his best to understand it. He would put me on these diets that the doctor suggested, give me my pills every day and night. He researched it so much but there wasn’t really anything on the Internet back then about it too. To this day I will always appreciate that. He still sends me things that could possibly help and articles to better help me understand what’s happening. I have struggled with weight gain in my lower section.

Ever since I was a kid I was a bigger girl. It was so hard for me to lose weight. I’ve struggled with eating disorders for years. Even doing that it barely made me lose weight. Until recently I never took it seriously. Sometimes I think it’s too late and I already scarred my body too much but who knows. Only time will tell.

I’ve always been afraid I could never have children. It’s one thing I’ve always wanted to do. I’ve always wanted to carry my own child and be a mom. Not that if I had to adopt or anything else I would love the child any less than if it came from me. It’s just the feeling of not being able to do the one thing our bodies are made to do. It’s dehumanizing. It makes me feel like less of a woman.

Having PCOS is a struggle but I’ve learned it’s not the end of the world.

... Read morePolycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) is a hormonal disorder affecting women worldwide. Many experience symptoms like irregular periods, weight gain, and infertility. It's important to understand that while each woman's experience with PCOS is unique, there are common challenges. Support groups and online communities offer vital resources and emotional connections. Engaging with others who have similar experiences can provide comfort and practical advice. Managing PCOS often involves lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, which can significantly improve symptoms and overall health. Nutritional guidance, such as a balanced diet focused on whole foods, can help manage insulin levels. Regular exercise is also crucial, as it can facilitate weight management and reduce the risk of diabetes. Additionally, seeking professional guidance from healthcare providers specializing in PCOS allows for tailored treatment plans. Remember, you're not alone in this journey—knowledge and community are essential in navigating PCOS.
