What I cook with fresh crab we caught
My husband loves going crabbing, and every now and then I’ll tag along. Some trips we get lucky and come home with fresh crabs. Other times, we don’t catch a thing.
Tonight was one of the lucky ones.
I turned our catch into crab fried rice, stir-fried water spinach with crab, crab soup, and fresh baked crab toast. Nothing beats cooking a meal with something we caught ourselves
Catching fresh crab adds a wonderful dimension to home cooking, creating unforgettable flavors that simply can't be beat by store-bought seafood. When my husband and I go crabbing, the thrill of the catch always enhances our appreciation for the meal we prepare afterward. One of my favorite dishes to make with fresh crab is crab fried rice. It’s simple: sauté garlic and onions, scramble a few eggs, add cooked rice, and mix in the fresh crab meat for a rich, flavorful dish. Another great recipe is stir-fried water spinach with crab. Water spinach, or "rau muống" as it’s known in Vietnamese cuisine, pairs perfectly with sweet and tender crab meat. Using garlic and a splash of fish sauce brings out the umami, while the fresh crab adds both texture and taste. Making crab soup is also incredibly satisfying. I like to prepare a light broth with ginger, lemongrass, and a touch of chili to highlight the sweetness of the crab, garnishing with fresh herbs like cilantro and green onions. Lastly, fresh baked crab toast offers a delicious appetizer; spreading a creamy crab mixture on baguette slices and toasting them until golden makes a perfect starter. Cooking with crab caught firsthand feels so rewarding because you know exactly how fresh the seafood is. This connection to the food source encourages me to experiment with traditional Vietnamese flavors while adding my personal twist. Whether you’re new to crabbing or an experienced forager, these recipe ideas are a great way to celebrate your catch and enjoy wholesome, homemade meals that bring family and friends together.
