Healing from CPTSD
Meant discovering for the first time, in my 40s, who I really am. #cptsd #codependency #trauma #booktok
Healing from Complex PTSD (CPTSD) often involves a deep, sometimes challenging process of learning who you truly are beyond the trauma. From my personal experience, living with CPTSD meant that much of my childhood was spent not discovering myself, but navigating the feelings and needs of those around me. While other children were exploring their identities and emotions, I was honing skills to manage others' emotions and behaviors, often at the expense of my own desires and needs. This pattern, common in those with CPTSD and codependency, makes the path to healing unique and complex. It requires unlearning deeply ingrained habits of self-neglect and turning inward to acknowledge suppressed wants and feelings. Therapy approaches such as trauma-informed counseling or EMDR therapy can be enormously helpful in processing past experiences and retraining emotional responses. One of the most empowering steps in healing is realizing that your worth does not depend on managing others’ emotions. Reclaiming personal power involves setting boundaries, practicing self-care, and gradually learning to trust your own feelings and intuition. Joining support groups or communities focused on CPTSD can also provide connection and validation, reducing feelings of isolation. Healing is not linear and can bring up many emotions, but with patience and dedication, it leads to a greater sense of self-awareness and emotional freedom. For anyone on this journey, remember that discovering yourself in your 40s or beyond is entirely possible and can be the start of a profoundly fulfilling chapter.
