Let’s talk: PCOS

Hi friends! Let’s talk about PCOS. I have been diagnosed for about a year now so I’m not an expert but I can tell you what I do to help cope with the symptoms.

Cysts:

Ahhh yes, the dreaded ovarian cysts. All uterus havers get them. But when you have PCOS, they are 10x worse. Over the last year I have become great friends with aleve, midol, hot showers, and heated blankets/pads. For me, the only way that will help an ovarian cyst rupture is lots and lots of heat and lots and lots of chocolate. The pain lasts a couple days to a week in my case. I highly recommend getting a heated blanket to help.

Periods:

Periods with PCOS are so hard. Mine range from 3-17 days. Some are painful. Some are not. And almost always unpredictable. If you’re like me, you bleed too much for pads and tampons hurt. I use a menstrual cup (when I’m not lazy). I can leave it in for a while and not worry about leaking or the dry tampon feeling. I also have a period care package I keep at my bedside! Use your period to really take care of yourself.

Weight:

This subject is hard. If you are a bigger person and have PCOS, it’s next to impossible to lose it. I have lost 15 pounds from intermittent fasting but then it stopped working. Just know you are beautiful the way you are.

No matter in what stage of your diagnosis you are, we can all agree PCOS is absolutely horrible to live with. I hope some of these things help with navigating those days where it’s harder than most.

... Read morePolycystic Ovary Syndrome (PCOS) affects millions of people worldwide, presenting a range of symptoms from irregular periods to weight management difficulties. It's essential to recognize that managing PCOS requires a holistic approach, including lifestyle changes, medical advice, and emotional support. Some individuals find relief through dietary adjustments, incorporating whole foods and avoiding processed sugars to stabilize insulin levels. Regular physical activity can also combat weight gain and improve mood, as exercise releases endorphins that positively impact mental health. Support groups, whether online or in-person, can provide a community of shared experiences and coping mechanisms. Many find solace in discussing their journeys with others facing similar challenges, helping to reduce feelings of isolation. Additionally, exploring mindfulness techniques like yoga or meditation may be beneficial in managing stress linked to PCOS. Ultimately, every person's experience with PCOS is unique, and finding the right combination of strategies is crucial for effective symptom management.
