😭Please TELL ME THIS IS NORMAL 😭

... Read moreIt's so easy to panic when you get a new piercing, like an industrial-style bar or a stud, and then your ear starts looking super swollen and red! I totally get that feeling. I remember when I first got my own ear piercing, I was constantly taking close-up photos, zooming in on every little bit of redness and swelling, wondering, "Is this normal healing, or have I messed something up?" First off, a little inflammation, redness, and swelling right after getting pierced is often a completely normal part of the healing process. Your body is reacting to the new jewelry and working to create a new skin tunnel. But how do you tell the difference between normal healing and something more serious like an infection or irritation that needs attention? Normal Healing Signs vs. When to Worry: Normal: You might experience some mild redness around the piercing site, slight swelling, and maybe a little clear or whitish discharge that crusts. It can also be a bit tender to touch. This usually subsides within a few days to a week. A little throbbing sensation can also be normal as blood flow increases to the area. When to Get Concerned: This is where paying close-up attention to the details really helps! If the redness and swelling increase significantly over time, if there's green or yellow discharge, persistent throbbing pain that gets worse, especially during painful cleaning attempts, or if the area feels very hot to the touch, these could be signs of infection. Another big red flag, as mentioned in my own experience, is if your stud or industrial-style bar jewelry feels too tight due to swelling, potentially embedding into the skin. This can be caused by the initial jewelry not having enough room for the natural swelling that occurs. My Healing Advice & What I've Learned: Clean Properly: Stick to a sterile saline solution (you can buy it or make your own with non-iodized salt and distilled water) twice a day. Avoid harsh chemicals like alcohol or hydrogen peroxide; they're too strong and can irritate the skin, delaying healing. Gently spray or soak the area without twisting the jewelry. Hands Off! Resist the urge to touch, twist, or play with your new ear piercing. Every time you touch it, you introduce bacteria and irritate the delicate healing tissue. This is crucial for preventing infection and reducing swelling. Check Jewelry Suitability: If your industrial-style bar or stud feels too tight and is digging into your swollen ear, it's a good idea to contact your professional piercer. They might recommend changing to a longer bar to accommodate the initial swelling. Never try to change fresh jewelry yourself, as this can cause further trauma and introduce bacteria. Cold Compress (Carefully!): For immediate swelling relief, a clean, cold compress (like an ice pack wrapped in a paper towel) can sometimes help. Apply it gently for 10-15 minutes at a time, but ensure it's sterile and doesn't directly touch the open wound. Sleep Smart: Try to avoid sleeping directly on your new piercing. A travel pillow can be a lifesaver, allowing you to sleep on your side without putting pressure on your ear. When to See a Professional: If you suspect an infection (increasing pain, fever, pus, severe swelling, streaks of redness spreading from the piercing), don't hesitate! Your piercer can often provide valuable healing advice and assess the situation. If it looks serious or they advise it, a doctor can prescribe antibiotics if a bacterial infection is present. It's a journey, but with proper care and attention to those close-up signs of redness and swelling, your industrial-style bar and stud will hopefully heal beautifully! Hang in there!

Is this normal to everyone?
I’ve been with my partner for a decade, he’s kind, smart, and we’ve built a life together. We moved cities, traveled, picked up new hobbies, even started businesses. Outwardly, it’s full but inwardly we’re just co-existing. There’s no intimacy in our life. We had that honeymoon phase spark, then
