are the healthier doritos swaps worth trying? 💪🏻🤔
I always try to make healthier swaps when I can, so I was super happy that doritos brand came out with some new options for their nacho cheese chips we know and love. I went ahead and got both to give a good comparison of the two, here are my thoughts 💭👇🏻:
The protein Doritos are the move. They taste the same just with added protein! There was no chalky protein taste like I was expecting. These are a 10/10!
The NKD doritos on the other hand, I wouldn’t really buy again. I thought they would taste the same just without dyes, but they reminded me more of like a tortilla chip with a tad bit more flavor. 6/10
Have you tried any of the new Doritos editions? What did you think? 🤔
Like many of you, I'm always on the hunt for ways to make my favorite treats a little healthier without sacrificing on flavor. That's why I was so intrigued when Doritos launched their 'healthier' alternatives: Protein Doritos and NKD Doritos. We all love that classic nacho cheese flavor, but what if we could enjoy it with a bit less guilt or added nutritional benefits? I really wanted to dig deeper into what makes these truly "healthy chip alternatives" and "healthy snacks," beyond just a taste test. When I evaluate a snack for its 'healthiness,' I look for a few key things. For the Protein Doritos, the standout feature for me was the protein content, as highlighted in my comparison. My bag stated 10g of protein, which is significantly higher than your typical chip and definitely caught my eye (the NKD bag, by comparison, only has 2g of protein). As someone who tries to incorporate more protein into my diet for satiety and energy, this is a huge plus. It means you're getting more than just empty calories; you're getting a snack that might actually keep you feeling fuller for longer. It's not just about what's removed, but what's added that makes a difference here. Then there are the NKD Doritos, which focus on being "without dyes," addressing the "no artificial flavors" aspect many people look for. I know a lot of us are becoming more conscious about artificial ingredients in our food. While they might still be a fried chip, the removal of artificial colors is a step towards a cleaner ingredient list for those who prioritize it. Personally, I appreciate brands trying to offer options with fewer additives, even if the taste isn't always a home run. Both options, interestingly, came in at around 150 calories per serving, which is pretty standard for a snack chip. So, it's not necessarily a calorie reducer, but rather a re-evaluation of the nutritional profile. The search queries also mentioned "baked" options, something I often consider when looking for healthier chips. While neither the Protein nor the NKD Doritos are explicitly marketed as baked, they represent different approaches to making snacks 'healthier.' If you're specifically after a baked chip for lower fat, these might not be your primary choice. However, the Protein Doritos offer a different kind of health benefit through increased protein, which is equally valuable depending on your dietary goals. For me, sometimes it's about the macronutrients, and other times it's about avoiding certain ingredients. Beyond just the product itself, I’ve learned that making smart snack choices involves a few personal strategies. Firstly, portion control is key. Even with these 'healthier' swaps, it's easy to overdo it if you eat straight from the bag. I try to pre-portion my snacks into smaller bowls. Secondly, always read the nutrition labels on the back. That's where you find the real story about calories, protein, and ingredients. For example, comparing the price point, both were quite similar, with the NKD at around $4.59 and the Protein at $4.48. Knowing this helps me decide if the added benefits are worth the specific cost. In my snacking journey, I've found that 'healthy' is a personal definition. For some, it's about fewer artificial ingredients; for others, it's about more protein or lower fat. These Doritos alternatives cater to different facets of that desire. While the Protein Doritos were a clear winner for me in terms of taste and added benefit, the NKD Doritos still serve a purpose for those looking to avoid certain dyes. Ultimately, diversifying your snack options is a great strategy. Alongside these Doritos alternatives, I also love to snack on things like air-popped popcorn, veggie sticks with hummus, or even a handful of nuts for a quick protein boost. It's all about finding what works for your taste buds and your body, making those mindful choices without feeling deprived. These new Doritos definitely give us more interesting options to consider in our quest for smarter snacking!

I unfortunately have not heard a single good thing about the naked ones 😭
