Not Everyone with ADHD is Hyper, Especially Women!

ADHD is often overlooked in women because our symptoms don’t always present as hyperactive.

Inattentive ADHD can present in other ways like:

-Impatience

-Always rushing (yourself and other people, even when there is no need to rush)

-Clumsiness

-Struggling with short-term memory

-Struggling with staying on task

-Chronic fatigue and burnout

-Symptoms of anxiety and depression

-Insomnia, broken sleep, lucid dreams

-Exacerbated PMS/Menopause symptoms

-Short-fused and lashing out over small things

Just because you aren’t hyper doesn’t mean you don’t have ADHD. The hyperactivity is often internal, and inattentive ADHD alone can be just as debilitating.

... Read moreInattentive ADHD in women is frequently underdiagnosed due to its subtle and non-hyperactive symptoms. Unlike the stereotypical hyperactive ADHD seen often in males, inattentive ADHD manifests through internalized symptoms that significantly impact daily functioning and mental health. Women with inattentive ADHD may experience impatience, a persistent sense of rushing—even when tasks do not require speed—clumsiness, and difficulties with short-term memory and maintaining focus. This subtype can cause chronic fatigue and burnout, as the brain struggles to stay on task without the outward release of hyperactivity. Additionally, symptoms such as anxiety, depression, and disrupted sleep patterns, including insomnia and lucid dreams, are common and often exacerbate the condition. Hormonal fluctuations in women further complicate ADHD symptoms. Many women report worsened inattentive symptoms linked to premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and menopause, including mood swings and cognitive difficulties. The internal hyperactivity common in many women manifests as racing thoughts and a short temper, often leading to lashing out over minor frustrations. This is crucial for healthcare providers and individuals alike to recognize, as it challenges the misconception that ADHD always involves overt hyperactivity. Acknowledging the unique presentation of ADHD in women is essential for early diagnosis and effective treatment. If untreated, inattentive ADHD can severely impair academic, professional, and social functioning, contributing to low self-esteem and chronic mental health issues. Awareness efforts and screening tools tailored for women can help bridge the gap, ensuring more women receive accurate diagnoses and appropriate support. Interventions often include behavioral strategies, coping mechanisms to manage time and memory challenges, as well as addressing comorbid anxiety or depressive disorders. Empowering women to identify and understand inattentive ADHD symptoms not only validates their experiences but also opens the door for targeted therapies that improve quality of life. This comprehensive understanding underscores the necessity of moving beyond the traditional hyperactivity-focused ADHD model, emphasizing a broader, sex-sensitive perspective on this neurodevelopmental disorder.
