It’s common to experience emotional dysregulation, which can intensify during times meant for relaxation, like vacations. Many neurodivergent individuals find that while they seek rest and a change of environment, the sensory overload or change in routine can cause unexpected stress or exhaustion. From personal experience, managing this dysregulation often means preparing thoughtfully before a trip. This preparation might include planning sensory-friendly activities, ensuring quiet downtime, and setting realistic expectations about social engagements. It can also mean having strategies in place to ground oneself when emotions run high, such as mindfulness techniques, noise-canceling headphones, or familiar comfort items. Connecting with other neurodivergent friends and communities helps validate these feelings and offers practical advice for coping. Shared experiences build understanding and remind us that it’s perfectly okay to feel overwhelmed at times. It’s important to acknowledge that self-care looks different for everyone and that adjusting plans to prioritize mental well-being is a form of strength, not weakness. Ultimately, embracing neurodivergence means honoring our individual needs and advocating for more inclusive environments where all nervous systems can thrive. Whether it’s during vacation or day-to-day life, recognizing and respecting how ADHD, Autism, and AuDHD shape our experiences empowers us to live more authentically and with greater compassion for ourselves and others.
