Greek Gyro Plate | Homemade

A gyro plate is one of my all time favorite comfort foods. In college, my friends and I would frequently eat out at a family-owned Mediterranean restaurant down the street from our dorms. Great food and great memories. The richness of the various spices and depth of the flavors all complement each other nicely to make a warm and filling meal. We were always left satisfied.

In the years since, I've learned to recreate some of my favorite recipes at home so that I can enjoy them more often.

If you're feeling adventurous and want to make your own, a blend of lamb, beef, or even chicken, heavily spiced with oregano, thyme, garlic, and a touch of paprika, can get you surprisingly close to the real deal. The key is to get it nice and crispy on the edges! Next, let's talk about the foundation of a great gyro dinner plate: the sides. A warm pita bread is non-negotiable for scooping up all those delicious flavors. I love to lightly toast mine for a few seconds in a dry pan or microwave it briefly until it's soft and pliable.
