Making Bread At Home - Snow Day ❄️

Hello! Chicago has a winter weather warning today, and so this is what I’m doing while staying safe inside! (Even though it didn’t snow by me)

My fiancé, partner, and I have started making bread a week ago and it’s been our favorite activity to do together!

We got the Kitchen Aid Stand Mixer as a gift for Christmas and it is a GAME CHANGER!

We are just baking regular white bread until we gain confidence to experiment with other breads.

This loaf is great for making sandwiches! 🥪

... Read moreStarting with basic white bread at home has been such a rewarding experience, especially on cold, snowy days like today. One helpful tip I’ve discovered is to let your dough rise for a full 2 to 3 hours covered with a moist towel—not just to follow tradition but because it really helps develop texture and flavor. Using a KitchenAid Stand Mixer with the dough hook attachment made kneading much less daunting and more fun. If you don’t have a mixer, don’t worry—mixing and kneading by hand is perfectly fine and connects you more deeply to the process. Baking at 350°F for about 30 minutes worked perfectly for my loaf, resulting in a soft interior and a golden crust that’s ideal for sandwiches. As I get more comfortable, I’m looking forward to experimenting with different bread types like sourdough, and maybe even trying some Dutch oven baking techniques for that rustic crust. If you're new to baking like me, don’t worry about perfection—each loaf is a learning adventure. Sharing this activity with loved ones makes the experience truly special, especially when snow keeps us warm indoors. Happy baking!
