... Read moreI've witnessed several encounters with snakes around local coffee shops, and each time it seems someone feels the need to intervene directly, often leading to dangerous situations. From personal observation, pythons are generally calm creatures unless provoked. Handling them without expertise is risky, as these animals defend themselves when threatened, which can result in bites — as seen in multiple reported incidents near Kallang Bahru and Marsiling. What I’ve learned is that these encounters should prompt us to contact the appropriate authorities rather than attempting DIY snake catching. Organizations like NParks and ACRES are trained and equipped to safely relocate wildlife, ensuring safety for both humans and the animals. It’s also worth noting that these snakes play important roles in our ecosystem, and disturbing them unnecessarily can cause unintended harm. Public education on respecting wildlife and awareness campaigns can reduce these incidents. So next time a python shows up near your local coffee shop, the best action is to keep a safe distance and make that call. This approach respects the wildlife, protects yourself, and keeps the community safe.

I agree we need to leave wildlife alone as they have a place in our world but you need to also look at the responsibility of the owner of the premises. If the owner does nothing and it bites someone, there will be questions as to why no actions were taken. So in crowded places where people cannot avoid using, action must be taken and a call to the authorities as soon as possible must be made for the safety of the public. Secondarily, cordoning off a section of the eatery may not ensure safety and who will bear the loss of business for the establishment.
