Endometriosis Excision Surgery

I had my first endometriosis excision surgery nearly a week ago!! This is my 4th surgery for endometriosis but the 1st I’ve had that was for excision. What does this mean? It means that this time, my new surgeon actually CUT OUT the endometriosis instead of just burning the tops off (ablation). The day after my surgery, a lot of my endometriosis symptoms have disappeared which I’m forever grateful to the Lord for. I can stand for long periods of time without feeling weak, I haven’t had a migraine or a headache, and the pain in my abdomen is noticeably different and I contribute that pain to having open wounds in my abdomen from excision. I had my left ureter freed from an endo adhesion, endo removed from the front and back of my uterus, both ovaries and my left and right pelvic sidewall (at least she’s symmetrical 🥴). This surgery costed me my whole deductible which I’m thankful was $1600 because I know it can be much much more money for others but it has been worth it so far. The pain from healing from this surgery has been much worse than my other surgeries and my abdomen has been so so so swollen but has calmed down day by day. The first few days, I could barely eat or drink because of how swollen my tummy was. Anything I ate or drank made the pressure and pain so much worse so I mainly ate small snacks. But now I’m back to eating my normal foods less than a week after surgery! So grateful! Thank you Lord for giving me the opportunity to have this surgery and to be healing so well. I love you so much! Thank you to my body for putting up with this disease for so long and I’m so looking forward to this next chapter for my body and I. #endometriosisexcision #endometriosis #endowarriors #stage2 #postsurgeryrecovery

If you feel called to give, I have a GoFundMe set up to help pay for my medical bills 💛🎗️ thank you for reading if you’ve gotten this far!

... Read moreUndergoing endometriosis excision surgery was a significant turning point in my battle with this chronic condition. While my original post touched on the immediate relief I felt and the contrast with prior procedures, there's so much more to understand about why excision is often considered the gold standard and what the longer-term recovery truly entails. Many of us living with endometriosis are familiar with ablation, where the surgeon burns the surface of the lesions. My experience, and that of many others, has shown that ablation often only addresses the superficial part of the disease, leaving the roots intact to regrow. Excision, on the other hand, involves carefully cutting out the endometriosis lesions entirely, which is why I felt such a profound difference almost immediately. It’s a more meticulous and often lengthier procedure, but the goal is to remove as much of the disease as possible, offering a better chance at sustained symptom relief and improving fertility outcomes for some. This deeper removal addresses the true extent of the endometriosis, including those stealthy lesions that might have been missed or superficially treated before. Life after endometriosis surgery isn't a straight line to perfect health, but it's a journey of significant improvement for many. Beyond the first week, managing fatigue is crucial, as your body is doing a lot of internal healing. I found that listening to my body, resting when needed, and gradually reintroducing gentle movement was key. Diet also played a role; focusing on anti-inflammatory foods helped support my healing and minimize discomfort. Emotionally, it's a rollercoaster – relief, gratitude, and sometimes anxiety about recurrence. Having a strong support system and openly communicating with my doctors about any lingering concerns has been incredibly helpful. Regarding the physical healing, the small incisions from the laparoscopy are a visible reminder of the surgery. My abdomen showed multiple small incisions, which initially had bandages. It's important to care for these to ensure proper healing and minimize scarring. Keeping them clean and dry, following your surgeon's instructions for dressing changes, and avoiding direct sun exposure can make a big difference. Over time, these scars tend to fade, becoming less noticeable. Beyond the visible, there’s also the internal healing that takes weeks or even months. You might feel internal tenderness or pulling sensations as tissues mend, which is a normal part of the physical recovery process. It's also important to have realistic expectations regarding the 'success rate' of endometriosis excision surgery. While it offers the best chance for symptom reduction and improved quality of life, it's not always a permanent cure. Endometriosis is a complex disease, and some individuals may experience recurrence over time. For me, success means a significant reduction in daily pain and an improved ability to function. It's about regaining control over my body and my life. Ongoing management, which might include hormonal therapies, lifestyle adjustments, and regular check-ups, is often part of the long-term strategy after surgery. My experience has truly empowered me to advocate for myself and understand my body better, and I hope by sharing this, others can feel more informed and hopeful on their own endometriosis journey.
