Had my first OB appointment today with Baby # 3. It went so well today Baby has a heart rate of 169bpm and is measuring right on track. I got all the genetic testing done today hoping the results come back well. Next month I start appointments with a high risk doctor.
I thought I was more prepared for this pregnancy after having a medically complex Baby, but I am so nervous.
... Read moreOh, the 10-week mark! It’s such a mix of excitement and nerves, isn’t it? Especially when you're heading in for that first significant OB check-up. I remember feeling a whirlwind of emotions before mine. If you're wondering what to expect, you're certainly not alone! Typically, this appointment is a big one, designed to get a comprehensive overview of your health and your baby’s early development.
They’ll likely start with a thorough health check: think blood tests, which can cover everything from your blood type and Rh factor to checking for anemia, certain infections, and crucially, offering options for genetic screening, just like the testing I had done. A urine sample will also be taken to check for things like protein, sugar, and potential UTIs. Your weight and blood pressure will be recorded to establish a baseline for your pregnancy journey.
But the most anticipated part for many, myself included, is usually the ultrasound. Seeing that tiny flutter on the screen, like my baby’s strong 169bpm heartbeat, is just magical and so incredibly reassuring! During this scan, the doctor or sonographer will carefully measure the baby, specifically the crown-rump length (CRL), to confirm the gestational age. They often use your Last Menstrual Period (LMP) as a crucial starting point for calculations, and the scan verifies that the baby is measuring right on track within the gestational sac. It’s truly incredible to see the developing embryo at such an early stage of pregnancy. This initial ultrasound image is often the first real glimpse you get of your little one, and it helps ensure everything is progressing as it should.
Don't be shy about asking questions during this time; I always keep a list! From nutrition advice specific to pregnancy to managing those pesky first-trimester symptoms like nausea and fatigue, your OB is there to guide you. It's also a great opportunity to discuss safe medications, suitable exercise routines, and what activities you might need to adjust. For me, anticipating appointments with a high-risk doctor, it was vital to clarify next steps.
And speaking of growth, let's talk about what your little one is up to at 10 weeks! It’s wild to think what a difference a few weeks make. At this stage, your baby has officially transitioned from an embryo to a fetus, and they're usually about 1 to 1.5 inches long, often compared to the size of a plump strawberry or a prune. Imagine that! All their vital organs are in place and rapidly developing. The heart is now fully formed and beating powerfully, circulating blood throughout their tiny body. The brain is experiencing incredible growth, producing thousands of neurons every minute.
Externally, tiny fingers and toes are more defined, and soon they’ll even have fingernails and hair follicles forming. Their eyelids are developing, though they’ll stay fused shut for a while longer. While your baby is making small, jerky movements, these are reflexive and you won't feel them yet. It’s a period of intense and crucial development, which is why those early check-ups and any recommended screenings are so important. Even though this is my third pregnancy, and I thought I’d be a seasoned pro, every journey is unique, and learning about these milestones helps me feel more connected and prepared. So if you're navigating your first or even third pregnancy, know that every week brings new wonders and new questions. Embrace every moment of this incredible journey!
