Finally made pizza dough with my starter, Poppy!! It turned out SO good! We definitely want to play around with the recipe a little and see if we can make the dough even better, but for our very first try I’d say we did pretty dang good. 😍
Recipe
1 cup sourdough discard
2 cups all-purpose flour
½ cup water
1 tsp salt
2 Tbsp olive oil
Mix everything together and knead for 2–3 minutes. Form into a ball, lightly coat with olive oil, cover, and let rise for at least 2 hours (I let mine rise about 6). Stretch into a pizza crust, add your favorite toppings, and bake. We baked ours at 525° until the crust was golden and the cheese was bubbly 😮💨 #homemadepizza #pizza #sourdoughpizza #sourdoughforbeginners #sourdoughstarter
Using sourdough discard to make pizza dough is a fantastic way to reduce waste and create delicious homemade pizza. From my experience, the key to a great sourdough pizza dough lies in the fermentation time and the quality of the starter. While the recipe calls for at least 2 hours of rising, I found that allowing the dough to rest for about 6 hours at room temperature enhances the flavor and creates a better texture. When mixing the ingredients—sourdough discard, all-purpose flour, water, salt, and olive oil—make sure to knead the dough until it feels smooth but still slightly tacky. This helps develop gluten which gives the crust its chewy character. Lightly coating the dough ball with olive oil prevents drying during the rising stage. One tip to improve the dough further is to perform a few stretch and folds during the rise, which strengthens the dough structure without intensive kneading. Also, baking at a high temperature, around 525°F (275°C), is essential to achieve that golden, crispy crust with bubbly cheese on top. For toppings, consider balancing moisture and flavor—using fresh vegetables and a mix of cheeses can create a delightful homemade pizza experience. Finally, don't hesitate to experiment by adjusting hydration levels or adding herbs into the dough to customize your pizza perfectly. Embracing sourdough discard pizza dough is both fun and rewarding, plus it allows beginners and seasoned bakers alike to enjoy artisan-style pizza right from their own kitchen.
