Pros & Cons Of working at a Non-Profit
I just joined the non profit world 10 months ago and here is what I’ve learned!
Pros:
✅ Meaningful work- non profits are really just such a special place to be. The people are all committed to a common purpose and mission. And ultimately you’re joining in on that mission which gives me a sense of belonging within the community. My day to day job focuses on improving access to stem cell transplant for patients which is a great cause to be a part of!
✅Creative opportunity- In the nonprofit world there’s a little less bureaucracy which leaves more room for creativity. I really enjoy this part of my job because I have a voice when it comes to the strategy of the work I do.
✅ Work life balance- as someone who came from the biotech world where the grind was real, nonprofit has been a breath of fresh air. I don’t feel the same degree of pressure because the nonprofit I work for is well established.
Cons:
❌Lower salary and budget- my base salary is higher at 170k than when I was at the bedside but overall there’s seems to be tighter budgeting around salary and projects. For example, when I took this role, they weren’t really open to negotiating the base salary and said it/ because they are nonprofit.
❌Funding challenges-new projects often rely on external funding so if there are changes to that then it could mean that the project needs to be paused or cut. This can create quite a bit of stress for the people working in that project.
❌Career growth feels more limited- although I’m still new to my role, I haven’t felt that there is clear guidance on career growth. This can be challenging at any company, but I have definitely heard that others in the non profit sector feel this too. This likely goes back to the way the roles are budgeted.
Anyone else work in non-profit or considering it?

The non-profit sector offers a range of opportunities and challenges for professionals. One key benefit of working in non-profits is the sense of purpose it provides; employees are often motivated by a commitment to social causes, such as healthcare, education, and community development. In non-profits, you might find yourself working in close-knit teams where collaboration is highly valued. Furthermore, the flexibility in creativity often leads to innovative solutions to pressing social issues. Non-profit organizations frequently embrace new ideas, allowing staff to implement novel strategies without significant bureaucratic hurdles. This environment can be invigorating and empowering for individuals seeking to make a difference through their work. However, potential employees should be aware of the financial implications of working within the non-profit sector. Typically, salaries in non-profits may be lower than in the corporate sector due to budget constraints. Additionally, job security can be precarious, with reliance on external funding introducing uncertainty. New projects or initiatives may face delays or cancellations if funding sources become strained. Career advancement may also present a challenge, as promoting from within can be limited due to budget constraints and smaller organizational structures. For those considering a career in non-profits, it can be beneficial to be proactive about discussing growth opportunities during the hiring process. Understanding the full scope of your potential contributions can lead to a more fulfilling career. As you navigate your options, consider joining online communities or forums dedicated to non-professionals, which can provide valuable insights and connections.
