How dating men helped me realize I was a lesbian 🌈

As women, we are expected to find love and romance with a man. All the books, movies, and tv shows tell us that’s how we are supposed to feel. I just never found that spark until I was with a woman.

In college, I found such a loving, vibrant queer community. These people and these experiences helped me explore my queer identity and ultimately, figure out who I am. And I’ll always be grateful for that!

How did you realize you were part of the LGBTQ+ community? 🏳️‍🌈

... Read moreIt's a question many of us grapple with: How do you truly know if you're a lesbian or identify as sapphic? For me, it wasn't an overnight revelation, but a gradual unfolding of understanding, especially after my experiences dating men. I spent years trying to fit into a mold that just didn't feel right, constantly wondering why I couldn't find that 'spark' everyone talked about. Often, the signs are subtle at first. You might find yourself feeling a deeper, more profound connection with women than you ever did with men – a kind of understanding and emotional resonance that just clicks. It's not just about physical attraction, although that's certainly part of it, but a sense of truly being seen and understood when you're with another woman. I remember thinking, 'Is this what everyone talks about?' when I started to connect with queer people. It was a big moment for me, realizing that what I was feeling was valid and real. Maybe you find yourself drawn to stories, music, or art that celebrates women loving women, and it just… resonates with you in a way nothing else has. No one 'becomes' a lesbian; you discover that it's who you are. It's your sexual orientation, an inherent part of your identity. For some, this realization comes early; for others, much later in life, often after trying to conform to heterosexual norms. My journey involved realizing that the excitement I was always told to expect with men just wasn't there for me, no matter how much I wanted it to be. Instead, I started to figure out that my heart truly moved and was excited by the idea of being with a woman. This wasn't a choice; it was a discovery of who I am. Exploring your identity, whether through reading stories, watching queer media, or, most importantly, connecting with a supportive LGBTQ+ community, can be incredibly validating. These experiences help you decide who you are, away from external pressures. It's okay to try some of these experiences, to really decide who you are, and not just the version of who you thought you were supposed to be. Finding a community where you feel safe and seen can be life-changing, offering perspectives and support that are invaluable during this journey. While every relationship has its challenges, finding love and connection within the lesbian community can bring immense joy and a unique sense of belonging. There's often a shared understanding and a deep emotional intimacy that can be incredibly fulfilling. For me, it led to a sense of authenticity and happiness I'd never experienced before. The advantages? Living authentically, finding profound connections, and being part of a vibrant, supportive community that celebrates who you are. If you're questioning your sexual orientation or feeling that familiar spark is missing in your current relationships, know that you're not alone. It's a journey of self-discovery, and every step, every reflection, brings you closer to understanding your true self. Embrace the process, seek out supportive communities, and trust your feelings. Your authentic self is waiting to be embraced. 🏳️‍🌈
