... Read moreMy fitness journey has been a marathon, not a sprint, and truly, it's been all about embracing 'Progress, not perfection.' When I started this path five years ago, I had no idea the mental and emotional hurdles I’d face alongside the physical ones. It’s easy to get caught up in the numbers on a scale or the measurements of a tape, but I've learned that true progress runs so much deeper than that.
One of the biggest lessons? How to measure progress when the scale isn't moving, or when it feels like your body isn't cooperating. Beyond the digits, I started paying attention to non-scale victories (NSVs). Can I walk further without getting winded? Do my clothes fit more comfortably? Am I sleeping better? My energy levels soared, and my mood improved dramatically. These subtle shifts are often the most rewarding indicators that you're truly making strides towards a healthier you, and they’re so crucial for long-term motivation.
Dealing with body image and things like loose skin has been a significant part of my journey. It's tough to look in the mirror after years of hard work and still see perceived imperfections. I used to nitpick every flaw, but I’ve slowly trained myself to shift my focus. Instead of seeing loose skin as a reminder of what 'was,' I now see it as a battle scar, a testament to the incredible transformation my body has undergone. It’s a constant practice of self-compassion and gratitude for what my body can do, rather than what it looks like by conventional standards. Finding communities where others share similar struggles has also been incredibly validating and helped me feel less alone.
Another powerful tool I discovered, especially when I felt stuck, was taking 'posing' pictures. It might sound vain, but it’s actually a fantastic way to objectively see changes that you might miss day-to-day. My body has changed so much, and sometimes the mirror plays tricks on you. But comparing photos side-by-side, even just a month apart, can reveal muscle definition or a more confident posture that you hadn't noticed. It’s a visual diary of your dedication and a concrete way to track your physical Progress, providing that much-needed boost when self-doubt creeps in.
Building self-esteem isn't a destination; it's a daily practice. For me, it involves acknowledging my efforts, celebrating small wins, and practicing positive self-talk. Instead of dwelling on what's left to achieve, I actively remind myself of all the incredible things I've already accomplished. Journaling about my feelings and achievements, no matter how small, has been transformative. It helps me recognize patterns, appreciate the mental strength I've developed, and keep my focus on the journey itself. This mental work is just as important as the physical workouts, shaping not just my body, but my entire outlook on life and self-worth.
So, if you're on your own fitness journey, remember that 'Progress' isn't always linear, and it's definitely not just about the numbers. It's about consistency, resilience, and learning to love and appreciate yourself at every stage. Keep showing up, keep pushing, and celebrate every single step forward, no matter how small.
Great job! Fitness journeys aren’t hard they take a lot of sweat and tears that’s for sure!
