Pros & Cons: One person marketing team

When I first took my current job as Marketing Manager at a health & wellness company, I knew the company was small but I didn’t know I was truly the only person in the Marketing department.

Joining this team fresh out of college, I had a lot to learn & QUICK. It was sort of a sink or swim type deal.

Personally, I work well under pressure so I found this in my ‘pro’ category along with:

⚪️ Experience I wouldn’t get working on a larger team

⚪️ Flexible work schedule since my boss lives out of state

⚪️ Opportunities to travel the world for shows that I likely wouldn’t go on if I had teammates

⚪️ Full creative abilities for any aspect (social media, print material, booth design, etc.)

Although I have a lot of pros at my job, being a one man show also has its cons:

⚪️ Constant requests from others people to help them or deliver them a creative - they don’t stop when I am traveling for work 🤗

⚪️ Having to teach my self tools I’ve never used before, like SalesForce & Gimp 2.0

⚪️ Not having someone to bounce ideas off of when I am not sure about something or am in a creative rut

I don’t think this is my forever company but it is a great fit for me right now. I’m loving all the pros and learning to work with the cons.

Working as a one-person marketing team presents both opportunities and challenges that can greatly impact professional growth. One advantage is the extensive experience gained from handling all aspects of marketing, allowing you to develop a broad skill set. This autonomy fosters creativity, as you have the freedom to explore innovative ideas without needing collective approval. However, the role also comes with notable challenges. You may face overwhelming demands from colleagues seeking assistance, which can hinder your productivity, especially when traveling. Moreover, the lack of collaboration can lead to creative blocks, making it crucial to develop self-research techniques and pull inspiration from various sources. As a solo professional, leveraging online resources and communities can become invaluable for support and idea generation. Networking with other marketing professionals through forums, webinars, or local events can provide insight, inspiration, and potential collaboration opportunities in the future. Balancing the pros and cons can help you adapt and thrive in this dynamic role, opening doors for your career development.
