The Man Who Couldn’t Let Go
When I first met him, I admired him.
He was confident, charismatic, driven, and well respected by many people around him. He seemed like someone who had survived difficult chapters in life and emerged stronger because of them.
He spoke about growth.
He spoke about healing.
He spoke about becoming a better version of himself. I believed him.
I saw someone who appeared self-aware, emotionally intelligent, and ready to build something meaningful.
What I didn’t realise was that there can be a huge difference between what someone says and what they are truly ready for.
Over time, I began noticing contradictions.
He spoke about moving forward, yet seemed unable to fully let go of the past. He spoke about honesty, yet I often found myself discovering things rather than being told them.
He spoke about healing, yet I felt like I was carrying wounds that didn’t belong to me. The more I tried to understand him, the less I understood where I stood in his life.
I wasn’t competing with another woman. I was competing with history.
With familiarity.
With unresolved emotions.
With a chapter that seemed permanently half-open.
One of the hardest lessons I learned is that someone can genuinely care about you and still not be capable of giving you the relationship you deserve.
Looking back, I don’t think he was the man I imagined him to be. I think he was someone still trying to figure himself out while asking others to believe he already had.
And unfortunately, I became part of that journey.
The red flag wasn’t that he had a past.
The red flag was that he never seemed willing to leave it behind.
