... Read morePolycystic Ovarian Syndrome (PCOS) is a complex genetic, hormonal, metabolic, and reproductive disorder that affects approximately 10-15% of women of reproductive age, making it one of the most common endocrine conditions. Despite its prevalence, PCOS is frequently undiagnosed or misdiagnosed, with estimates showing that 50-70% of women with PCOS remain unaware of their condition. This gap in diagnosis delays essential treatment and increases the risk of developing serious health issues. PCOS manifests through a wide range of symptoms including irregular menstruation, excess hair growth (hirsutism), hair loss, fatigue, weight gain, mood swings, brain fog, pelvic pain, ovarian cysts, and extreme cravings. These symptoms can significantly affect mental health, contributing to anxiety, depression, low self-esteem, irritability, burnout, and social isolation. Women with PCOS are 3 times more likely to struggle with anxiety and depression and 8 times more likely to experience infertility. Complications associated with PCOS extend beyond reproductive health. Women diagnosed with PCOS face a higher likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes (4 times more likely), cardiovascular disease, liver disease, endometrial cancer, and obesity. Additionally, PCOS patients are 2.5 times more likely to also suffer from endometriosis, further complicating reproductive health. Since PCOS is a chronic condition without a known cure, management focuses on alleviating symptoms and reducing risks through lifestyle changes like diet and exercise, hormonal treatments, and mental health support. Early diagnosis is crucial to preventing long-term complications and improving quality of life. Awareness and education about PCOS need to increase among healthcare providers and the communities they serve. Women experiencing symptoms consistent with PCOS should seek medical advice and consider comprehensive screening. Support groups and resources are also valuable for coping with the emotional and physical burdens of PCOS. Understanding the full impact of PCOS, from physical health to mental well-being, is essential to changing the narrative and ensuring that women receive the diagnosis and support they need for this lifelong condition.
