BTS: Making, Pancakes
Timelapse of my watercolor sketchbook artwork titled, “Pancakes”
When I first started exploring watercolor sketching, I was drawn to combining everyday subjects with a touch of fantasy to make the artwork feel more engaging. Creating the "Pancakes" piece was particularly rewarding because it allowed me to experiment with blending realistic textures of food with whimsical elements through fantasy art techniques. Using watercolors gave me the flexibility to layer soft washes that suggest a delicate atmosphere around the pancakes. This timelapse captures the progression from initial rough sketches to the final vivid coloring. I found that sketching first in light pencil helped outline the basic shapes, which I then enhanced with deeper hues of water to give a sense of depth. Playing with wet-on-wet technique was key for achieving the soft, dreamy effect ideal for the fantasy vibe. For artists interested in creating similar artworks, I recommend focusing on how water interacts with pigment in your sketchbook. Each brushstroke can evoke different textures and moods, especially when portraying food items like pancakes surrounded by imaginative elements. Plus, sharing your process as a timelapse can inspire others and document your growth. Overall, combining the sketchbook format with watercolor fantasy art offers endless creative possibilities, and I encourage all artists to try mixing realistic subjects with imaginative touches to see where their creativity flows.
