My Biggest Teen Skin Regrets + What I Do Different
My skin has definitely been through a journey of her own!
When I first entered my preteens, my skin became super oily and I saw a few breakouts. I had NO IDEA what I was doing so these are the mistakes I made and what I do differently now!
Mistake #1 : I exfoliated every single day with the St. Ives apricot face exfoliant 😬
- I feel like every person has fallen victim to this rough scrub because it was marketed as the best product to make your skin smooth! It was way too rough on my skin and literally ripped into my face.
✅ What I do now: I now use toner pads or other chemical exfoliants once a week!
Mistake #2 : I only wore sunscreen when I would go to the beach or pool ☀️
- I was outside basically everyday, but for some reason I thought I only needed sunscreen if I would be near water 🤷🏻♀️ I was also afraid of wearing sunscreen in case it triggered my acne, but little did I know that sun protection would help my scars fade faster!
What I do now: You best believe that I put on my acne-safe sunscreen DAILY, even if I'm staying inside because the UV rays are always present, even through windows!
Mistake #3 : I used a harsh face wash with active ingredients twice a day 😨
- I wanted to get rid of my acne so bad that I thought loading up on active ingredients like salicylic acid would cure it, but it only made my skin more sensitive which made it more red and acne-prone 😭
What I do now: Switching to a basic foaming cleanser has helped me get rid of the dirt and oil in a more gentle way!

Okay, so we've talked about my biggest skincare screw-ups as a teenager, and trust me, learning from those was a game-changer! But getting that healthy, glowing teen skin isn't just about avoiding mistakes; it's also about building a consistent routine and understanding your skin's needs. If you're hoping for that 'glow up' and want to tackle common teen skin problems, here are a few more things I wish someone had told me sooner. First off, consistency is KEY! I know, it sounds boring, but sticking to your routine daily, morning and night, truly makes a difference. It's not about using a million products; it's about finding a few good ones and using them regularly. For me, that meant finally embracing a gentle foaming cleanser both morning and evening, followed by a light, hydrating moisturizer. And yes, my trusty sunscreen daily! Even when it felt like a chore, I reminded myself that protecting my skin now would pay off big time later. Speaking of routines, don't forget the power of hydration and diet. I used to think skincare was all about what I put on my face, but what I put in my body matters just as much. Drinking plenty of water truly helps keep your skin plump and can reduce oiliness. And while I'm not saying you have to give up all your favorite snacks, paying attention to how certain foods (like excessive sugar or dairy) affect your breakouts can be really insightful. It's all about balance, right? Another thing I learned is to be patient with new products. When I was a teen, I'd try a new acne treatment for a few days, see no instant results, and then ditch it. Big mistake! Skincare products, especially those targeting specific concerns like acne, need time – often 4-6 weeks – to show their true effects. Introduce one new product at a time, patch test it, and give it a fair chance. Your skin isn't going to transform overnight, but with patience, you’ll see progress. And please, please don't pick at your pimples! I know how tempting it is, but it almost always leads to more inflammation, longer-lasting marks, and even scarring. Instead, try a spot treatment with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide, and let it do its magic. If you're dealing with really persistent or painful acne, don't be afraid to talk to a dermatologist. They can offer personalized advice and prescription treatments that can make a huge difference. I wish I had seen one sooner instead of trying every DIY hack under the sun! Lastly, remember that self-care goes beyond just your physical routine. Stress can play a huge role in skin flare-ups. Finding ways to manage stress, whether it's through exercise, hobbies, spending time with friends, or just getting enough sleep, can indirectly lead to healthier skin. Your teen years are a huge journey, and taking care of yourself, inside and out, is the best 'glow up' secret there is. Hope these extra tips help you on your own skincare journey!
