ADHD and the struggle with time

Time blindness is one of those ADHD symptoms nobody really talks about—but it’s huge. I literally cannot feel time the way other people do. I’ll think something takes 10 minutes and it’s 3 hours, or plan a whole afternoon for something that takes 20 minutes. People see me as late, lazy, or inconsiderate, but it’s not that I don’t care—I genuinely cannot perceive time accurately. Earlier I played a game on my phone and thought I’d been on for 30 minutes… it was almost 2 hours. This is my life constantly misjudging the flow of time, and yes, it comes with real social and professional consequences. How do you explain that to someone without it sounding like an excuse?

... Read moreTime blindness is a lesser-known but significant symptom experienced by many people with ADHD. It refers to the difficulty in sensing the passage of time accurately, which can lead to frequent misjudgments about how long tasks take or when events occur. This can result in chronic lateness, frustration, and misunderstandings with others who may mistakenly perceive the individual as careless or unmotivated. One of the biggest challenges with time blindness is that it’s invisible—people can’t see it or understand it without explanation. It is not about laziness or lack of intention but a genuine neurological difficulty that affects time perception and time management skills. Practical strategies can help those struggling with time blindness. Using timers, alarms, and visual clocks helps create external cues for time passing. Breaking down tasks into smaller steps with estimated timeframes can improve planning accuracy. Building routines and using reminders reduce the cognitive load of constantly tracking time mentally. Moreover, awareness and education are vital. When friends, family, and colleagues understand that time blindness is a real ADHD symptom, it fosters empathy and decreases negative judgments. Communicating openly about this can help manage expectations and develop support systems. Mental health professionals and ADHD coaches can provide tailored approaches to overcome daily challenges related to time awareness. Cognitive-behavioral techniques also can improve executive functioning skills related to time management. In summary, time blindness in ADHD is a challenging but manageable symptom. Through practical tools, awareness, and support, individuals can reduce the negative impacts on their social and professional lives, turning an invisible struggle into a shared understanding.
