how can i prevent mold growth on my palettes?

Help!! 2/3 of my eyeshadow palettes recently got mold growing on them (greyish, furry spores) and I have no idea why. I keep them stored in a dry, dark place and rarely use them (once every 2 weeks), but for some reason they now have these furry white spots?

I apply them using my fingers, so could this be it? how else can i prevent mould growth on my palettes?

... Read moreFinding mold on your beloved eyeshadow palettes is truly horrifying, isn't it? I totally get how frustrating it feels to see those greyish, furry spores appear, especially when you think you're doing everything right by storing them in a dry, dark place and not even using them that often. You mentioned using your fingers, and yes, that can definitely be a culprit! Our fingers, even clean ones, transfer oils, bacteria, and moisture to the product. But it's not the only reason. Mold spores are microscopic and are everywhere in the air. They just need the right conditions to thrive on your makeup. Eyeshadow formulas often contain ingredients that can attract moisture. Combine that with trapped humidity in palettes, a warm environment, or even just old product, and you've got a breeding ground. Many people don't realize that makeup, including eyeshadow palettes, has an expiry date – usually 12-24 months after opening. Using expired makeup can increase the risk of mold. So, how can I prevent mould growth on my eyeshadow palettes, you ask? Here are my go-to tips: First off, always, always wash your hands thoroughly before touching your makeup. If you use brushes, make sure your makeup brush is cleaned regularly and dried completely. Using a clean brush for each application, or at least washing them weekly, is crucial. This significantly reduces the transfer of oils and bacteria. If you prefer using your fingers, consider using a clean, disposable applicator or a freshly cleaned brush instead. If you must use fingers, ensure they are perfectly dry and clean. Avoid dipping your fingers back into the pan if they've touched your skin already without re-cleaning. While a dry, dark place is good for storage, ensure it's not too humid. Bathrooms, for example, are often too humid for makeup storage. Keep eyeshadow palettes tightly closed to prevent airborne spores from settling. Consider adding a small desiccant packet (like those silica gel packets that come with new products) to your makeup drawer if you live in a very humid climate, but be careful they don't touch the makeup directly. Always check the PAO (Period After Opening) symbol on your palettes – it looks like an open jar with a number and 'M' (e.g., '12M' for 12 months). Stick to these guidelines. If you see changes in texture, smell, or color, it's definitely time to let go. Also, avoid sharing makeup with others, as this is a prime way to transfer bacteria and fungi. Now, the tough part. Unfortunately, once mold is visibly present on your eyeshadow, it's generally recommended to discard the entire palette, as difficult as that can be (like those eyeshadow palettes and the makeup brush discarded in the trash can in the image you might have seen). The visible mold is just the tip of the iceberg; the root system of the fungus is likely embedded deeper into the product, and spores can spread easily. Trying to scrape it off isn't safe and can lead to eye infections or other skin issues. It's a harsh reality, but prioritizing your eye health over a makeup product is always the best choice. By adopting these simple hygiene and storage habits, you can significantly reduce the chances of ever having to ask 'how can I prevent mould growth on my eyeshadow palettes?' again!
