How do you eat salted egg yolks?
What’s your favorite way to enjoy salted egg yolks? I laid the egg yolk on top of a small bed of @maldonsalt smoked sea salt and topped it again with more of the Maldon salt before fully encapsulating it in your every day kosher salt, so I’m hoping it’s soaks up that smoked flavor. These take a few days to cure so we’ve got some time to come up with recipe ideas! lol #foodies #asiancuisine #cooking #Lemon8Diary #saltedeggyolk
Oh my goodness, I'm so excited about these cured salted egg yolks! After all that anticipation, thinking about how to transform them into something truly delicious is the best part. I've been brainstorming based on everyone's amazing suggestions and my own research, and it turns out there are so many fantastic ways to enjoy these golden treasures! First off, for those wondering how to eat salted eggs or what to do with salted egg yolks, the possibilities are endless. I remember seeing Chinese salted egg yolks used whole in traditional dishes like mooncakes and onigiri, which are classic and always a hit. But beyond those, imagine them chopped finely and stirred into a rich, creamy congee – it adds such an incredible umami depth. I've also heard of them being mashed into a paste and mixed with butter for a savory spread on toast, or even incorporated into a decadent custard. One idea that truly captivated me, which I actually saw mentioned, was having them dehydrated and shaved on top of food as a flavor enhancer. This sounds absolutely brilliant! To do this, after they're cured, you might gently bake them at a low temperature until they're firm and dry, or even use a food dehydrator. Once fully dried, they can be grated or shaved over so many dishes. Think about sprinkling them over a bowl of steaming noodles, a fresh salad, or even a simple plate of scrambled eggs for an instant gourmet upgrade. It’s like a savory Parmesan, but with that unique salted egg kick! This method really opens up a world of salted egg yolk uses beyond just traditional recipes. For recipes with salted egg yolks, don't just stop at savory. While they excel in dishes like stir-fried prawns with salted egg yolk sauce or steamed pork patties, they can also shine in desserts. Salted egg yolk lava buns (liu sha bao) are a personal favorite, where the creamy, slightly sweet and salty filling just oozes out. And for boiled egg yolk recipes, if you're using pre-boiled yolks, they can be mashed and used in fillings or sauces just as effectively. I'm also keen to try making a salted egg yolk butter sauce – perfect for coating anything from crispy fried chicken wings to stir-fried greens. Just mash the yolks, sauté them lightly in butter with some garlic and chili, and you have an incredibly addictive sauce. The 咸蛋黄 (salted egg yolk) is such a versatile ingredient, truly bridging the gap between traditional Asian flavors and modern culinary creativity. So, if you're looking for salted egg recipe ideas, definitely consider whether you want them whole, crumbled, mashed, or even dehydrated and shaved. Each form offers a different texture and intensity of flavor. I can't wait to experiment and share my results with you all once my current batch is perfectly cured!
