Let’s eat more fruits & veggies

This is your official sign

2025/4/2 Edited to

... Read moreHey everyone! We all know we should eat more fruits and vegetables, right? But sometimes, it feels like a daunting task. For me, realizing the incredible impact they have on my energy levels and overall well-being was my official sign to make a change. I used to struggle to hit the recommended daily servings, but over time, I've found some super easy and delicious ways to sneak them into almost every meal. And guess what? It's been a game-changer! Why I Prioritize Fruits & Veggies (And You Should Too!) The benefits are truly endless! Fruits and vegetables are packed with essential vitamins, minerals, and fiber, which are crucial for our bodies to function optimally. For instance, did you know that leafy greens like spinach and kale are amazing sources of Vitamin K and folate, while citrus fruits like oranges and grapefruits are bursting with Vitamin C? These nutrients aren't just good for preventing scurvy (a historical problem!), they support everything from our immune system to our skin health, and even our mental clarity. Eating a variety from each category every day helps reduce the risk of chronic diseases, keeps our digestive system happy, and provides sustained energy throughout the day. It's not just about what they *prevent*, but what they add to our lives – vibrancy and resilience! My Go-To Strategies for Sneaking in More Produce Getting more fruits and veggies doesn't have to mean eating plain salads all the time. Here are some of my favorite simple hacks: Smoothie Power: Start your day with a smoothie! Blend spinach (you won't even taste it!), berries, a banana, and a liquid of your choice. It's a quick way to get multiple servings in one go. Snack Smart: Instead of reaching for processed snacks, keep cut-up veggies like carrots, bell peppers, and cucumber sticks handy with some hummus, or have an apple or pear readily available. I love keeping a bag of grapes in my bag for an easy, refreshing treat. Boost Your Breakfast: Add berries to your oatmeal or yogurt, or sauté some mushrooms and bell peppers to go with your eggs. Lunch & Dinner Add-Ins: This is where it gets fun! Add a handful of spinach to your pasta sauce, grate zucchini into meatballs, or pile extra veggies onto your sandwiches and wraps. Stir-fries and sheet pan meals are also fantastic for using up lots of different vegetables. I often roast a big batch of broccoli, sweet potatoes, and cauliflower at the beginning of the week to throw into meals later. Soup & Stew Secret: Puree vegetables like carrots, squash, or even cauliflower into your soups and stews. It thickens them naturally and ups the nutritional content without anyone noticing. Making it Easy: Prep & Storage Hacks One tip that has truly transformed my fruit and vegetable intake is proper meal prep and storage. When I get home from the grocery store, I wash and chop a lot of my produce right away. For example, I'll cut up bell peppers, slice cucumbers, and wash my berries. Storing them in airtight, reusable containers – like a stasher bag or glass containers – keeps them fresh longer and makes them super accessible for quick snacks or adding to meals. Common Questions I Get Asked About Fruit & Veggie Diets Can we eat vegetables and fruits together? Absolutely! There's no scientific evidence to suggest any harm in combining them. In fact, eating them together often means you're getting a wider array of nutrients and fiber, which is beneficial for digestion and overall health. Don't stress too much about 'food combining' rules for general health. How much should we be eating? Current recommendations suggest consuming a variety from each category every day. Generally, aiming for at least 5 servings (2 fruits, 3 vegetables) is a great start, but more is often better! Listen to your body and try to incorporate them into every meal. Making fruits and vegetables a bigger part of your diet doesn't have to be complicated. Start small, find what you enjoy, and celebrate every extra serving you add. Your body will thank you!
