“… sleep cannot fix.” 😴
“There is a specific kind of exhaustion that sleep cannot fix.” 😴
For too long, Black women have felt the pressure to wear the “Invincible Mask.”
This strategy, known as shifting, forces us to constantly perform a version of ourselves that makes others comfortable, sacrificing our authentic selves in the process.
In my latest Substack post, I’m unpacking the high cost of this survival mechanism and defining the concepts that keep the mask in place:
• 🌸 The Lily Complex: The internal pressure to alter your physical appearance to conform to Eurocentric standards of professionalism.
• 💪🏾 The Sisterella Complex: The mental health trap of the “Strong Black Woman” archetype, where high achievement masks deep exhaustion and denial of your own needs.
Running this internal software in the background of your life uses immense executive energy, leading to bone-deep burnout.
It’s time to move from systemic defense to legacy offense. We must learn to drop the armor and create a life—and a home ecosystem—centered on rest and authenticity.
