Day 13/100 – Me vs Me: Becoming a Runner
Up early today—but not for a run. Every year, my fam does a Jeep trip the day after the last day of school to kick off summer right. Since my husband’s family is visiting from Philly, I took one for the team and stayed home so they could soak up the Colorado trails.
I helped pack the Jeep (which felt like a cardio session of its own), got some house stuff done, and finally had a quiet moment to go try on new running shoes. Was fully ready to treat myself before my afternoon run… but of course, they didn’t have my size. Had to order them, which means: delayed gratification + something to look forward to this week.
Since I had more time than usual, I decided to run as much as my body felt like giving—and just see what happened.
This is why I love running outside: the scenery doesn’t disappoint. Today I witnessed:
• A birthday party being set up at the park
• A couple of teens getting into some light river mischief
• A dad sprinting after a cat while his toddler ran around completely pantsless from the waist down
You just don’t get that kind of entertainment on a treadmill.
I popped home about every mile for a sip of water—3 sips = 3 steps = kept me moving. No new shoes, but still got the miles in and honestly felt kind of proud of this one.
Running outdoors offers an unmatched experience of nature’s beauty and community happenings. In addition to enjoying the stunning scenery, it's a chance to appreciate the moments that make running special, like witnessing a birthday setup or playful kids near a river. Such encounters can help enhance motivation while jogging. Moreover, experimenting with techniques like short water breaks can significantly boost stamina and comfort during longer runs. Celebrating personal milestones, regardless of shoe upgrades, contributes to a well-rounded running journey. If you're also on a running path, consider preparing a plan, embracing spontaneous adventures, and allowing flexibility in your routine to foster a more enjoyable and sustainable experience.
