Hypermobility

Hypermobility & living an active lifestyle ๐Ÿซถ๐Ÿป

I always knew I was hypermobile, but these past couple years were the first time itโ€™s ever began to cause pain and issues for me.

As I got deeper into my fitness journey, I was doing more intense and high impact workouts, resulting in a lot of pain & injuries. I had to stop and reevaluate my workouts and put together a new plan that works better for me. Instead of running a lot which was putting too much stress on my ankles and knees, I stick with things like walking, yoga, biking and strength training.

Everyone with hypermobility is different, so listen to your body and do whatโ€™s best for you!

... Read moreHey everyone! Following up on my journey with hypermobility, I wanted to dive a bit deeper into how I actually manage the pain and stay active without constant injuries. It's truly a learning process, and I've picked up so many practical tips that I wish I knew earlier! For anyone struggling with hypermobility, especially around their legs and knees, strength training has been a game-changer. It's not about lifting heavy, but about building controlled, foundational strength and stability around your joints. Think of it as creating a natural support system for your hypermobile ligaments. I focus on slow, deliberate movements. For hypermobile knees, exercises like glute bridges, wall sits (holding for short periods), and controlled squats help build strength in the surrounding muscles like quads, hamstrings, and glutes. Resistance band work for hip abductors is also fantastic for hip stability, which in turn supports the knees. Don't forget your core! A strong core is fundamental for overall body stability. Pilates and yoga (modified for hypermobility, of course) are excellent for this. Beyond just general strength training for hypermobility, I've found a huge difference in incorporating specific stability exercises. This isn't just about big muscles; it's about proprioception โ€“ your body's awareness of where it is in space. Simple balance exercises, like standing on one leg (next to a wall for support!), or doing controlled single-leg deadlifts with light weight, can significantly improve your joint stability. Remember, consistency is key, even if it's just 10-15 minutes a day. It's not all about exercise, though. What you put into your body plays a massive role in managing hypermobility. I've really focused on healthy food habits to reduce inflammation, which often exacerbates joint pain. I try to limit hypermobility foods to avoid like highly processed snacks, excessive sugar, and anything that makes me feel inflamed. Instead, I load up on anti-inflammatory foods like berries, leafy greens, fatty fish, and turmeric. Getting enough protein is also super important for tissue repair and muscle building. And don't underestimate electrolytes! Staying properly hydrated with balanced electrolytes can help with muscle function and overall well-being when you're active. Finally, let's talk about support methods and recovery. During my more active days, using braces or supportive footwear (sometimes with shoe inserts) can make a world of difference, especially for my hypermobile knees or ankles. It's not about relying on them, but using them as an extra layer of protection when needed. For pain management strategies, I've learned to listen intently to my body. Gentle stretching, heat pads for muscle soreness, or cold packs for acute inflammation have become my go-to. Sometimes, the best recovery is just giving your body proper rest. Remember, everyone with hypermobility is different, so find what truly works for you and don't be afraid to experiment and adjust your routine. Our bodies are amazing, and with the right care, we can absolutely lead fulfilling, active lives!
