I’ve got ADHD, please move faster

5/2 Edited to

... Read moreLiving with ADHD often means our minds are racing ahead, constantly anticipating what's next rather than focusing on the present moment. This eagerness for dopamine and new stimulation can make slow pacing—whether behind slow walkers or drivers—especially difficult. I’ve personally found that when I’m stuck waiting or forced to slow down, it feels almost like a mental tug-of-war. My brain is already at the destination, planning and moving forward, but my environment keeps me restrained, creating a feeling of restlessness and irritation. This sensation is not just impatience; it’s a neurological response tied to how ADHD brains process time and movement differently. When things slow down, it sometimes triggers a spiraling feeling of frustration because emotional regulation is already a challenge. We don't just dislike waiting; it feels like we have to drag ourselves back to the current moment, which is mentally exhausting. One strategy I’ve found helpful is to carry small, stimulating activities or tools like fidget toys or music to stay engaged during unavoidable slowdowns. Additionally, practicing mindfulness—even if it feels unnatural at first—can help anchor attention in the present moment and reduce that mental spiraling. Understanding that this response is a common part of ADHD helps inform others around us to be patient, and it reminds us to be compassionate with ourselves when these moments arise. Overall, recognizing the unique way ADHD brains experience time and movement helps us find more effective coping mechanisms and communicate our needs better, helping reduce frustration for everyone involved.
