Chord progressions that make the Billboard Hot 100

Following the announcement of The Life of a Showgirl, @billboard and @billboardcharts came out with a post saying Max Martin is the No. 1 Top Producer of the 21st Century on Billboard’s Hot 100.

These songs, their lyrics, and their chord progression have stood the test of time and spent WEEKS each at no. 1. Whether you want to write pop or not, it’s fun to see what people lean in to and what people like to listen to.

California Gurls by Katy Perry

🌴 spent 6 weeks at number 1

🌴 written in the key of F major, which is a fairly popular key amongst pop songs

🌴 the chord progression in the chorus is A minor — B flat — C major — D minor

One More Night by Maroon 5

⭐️ spent a whopping 9 weeks at number 1

⭐️ written in the key of F minor, a slightly less common key than F major, but still widely used

⭐️ the main chord progression we hear is F minor — E flat — B flat minor — F minor

E.T. by Katy Perry

👽 spent a solid 5 weeks at number 1

👽 also written in the key of F minor

👽 the main chord progression we hear is D flat — E flat — F minor — A flat

Today, challenge yourself to write in a new key or try a new chord progression (maybe one of these). Let other people’s work inspire you just as much as you inspire yourself!

... Read moreBuilding on the awesome insights about Billboard Hot 100 hits, I've also been exploring how other genres use chord progressions to create their magic. It's so cool how music theory can cross cultures, and how different popular songs, whether US chart-toppers or international sensations, often share underlying principles of catchy harmony! One area I've really dived into is J-Pop. Japanese pop music often has incredibly catchy and uplifting, or sometimes melancholic, chord progressions. Many J-Pop songs, especially iconic anime themes or idol group hits, frequently use variations of what's sometimes called the 'Pachelbel's Canon progression.' Think I-V-vi-IV (like C-G-Am-F in C major) or vi-IV-I-V (Am-F-C-G). I've found this structure creates a sense of familiarity yet allows for so much melodic creativity. It’s like they take a classic Western harmonic foundation and infuse it with unique Japanese sensibilities, leading to bright, hopeful, or bittersweet soundscapes. When I listen to J-Pop, I notice how these progressions evoke strong emotions, from exhilarating joy to poignant nostalgia, often by clever voicings. Sometimes, you'll also hear progressions that lean into jazzier chords or unexpected key changes, keeping things fresh and exciting. It’s not just about the chords themselves but how they’re voiced, the rhythmic interplay, and how they support intricate vocal melodies. For anyone looking to expand their songwriting palette, seriously, checking out J-Pop for inspiration is a game-changer – it offers a whole new set of emotional textures and fresh harmonic ideas. And speaking of specific songs and what makes hits, a lot of people wonder about the secret sauce behind massive tracks like Taylor Swift’s 'Shake It Off.' I remember trying to figure out how that song just makes you want to dance and its incredible staying power! From what I've learned from my own digging, 'Shake It Off' is primarily in the key of G Major. The main chord progression you hear throughout the verses and chorus is simply G – Am – Em – C. It's a classic pop progression, a I-ii-vi-IV, but executed brilliantly. What makes it so effective isn't just the chords, which are straightforward, but the energetic tempo, the driving drum beat, and Taylor's confident, playful vocal delivery. It just goes to show that you don't always need complex jazz harmony or obscure scales to write a number one hit; sometimes, it's about perfecting the simple things and making them totally infectious. I often tell my friends that if you're stuck on a progression, sometimes going back to these fundamental, feel-good changes can spark something amazing. It's a great example of how a repetitive yet catchy progression, much like the ones we saw in Katy Perry's 'California Gurls' or Maroon 5's 'One More Night,' can anchor a whole song and make it unforgettable. It’s really inspiring to see how artists like Taylor use these foundational elements to craft something globally appealing that resonates with so many. I'd even suggest trying to write a melody over just these four chords – you might be surprised at what you come up with! So, whether it's the sophisticated patterns found in J-Pop or the infectious simplicity and solid structure of a Taylor Swift hit, there's always something new to learn and apply to our own music. Keep exploring, creatives!
