Bonnie's
2025/3/6 Edited to

... Read moreSo, you've heard about Bonnie's, and maybe you're wondering if it lives up to the Michelin Bib Gourmand hype. Let me tell you, it's an experience! When I first heard about a Chinese-American spot getting that kind of recognition, my curiosity was piqued. It's not just about fine dining; it's about quality food at a reasonable price, and Bonnie's definitely brings that innovative twist to classic flavors. One dish that truly stood out for me, and I often hear people raving about, is their DAO GOK. Imagine perfectly crisp long beans, infused with salty bean curds – it's a symphony of textures and umami. The detailed description from the OCR really captures it: those Chinese long beans with crispy fried bits, possibly yauh ja gwai, and that fermented bean curd garlic butter sauce? Absolutely divine. It's the kind of appetizer you won't want to share, a true standout that embodies the creative spirit of the menu. Now, let's talk about the more adventurous side of the menu, which brings us to the famous (or infamous, depending on who you ask!) Italian Combo Fried Rice. This one definitely sparks conversation, and if you're searching for 'bologna fried rice,' this is likely what you're thinking of. The description from the OCR is spot on: fried bologna, hot capicola, lettuce, tomato, and chips all mixed into the rice, topped with peperoncini mayo. It's certainly a unique concept, blurring the lines between deli and diner. While it wasn't my personal favorite – I found it a bit less cohesive than other dishes – I can appreciate the creative ambition behind it. It’s definitely a dish for those who love to experiment and are open to unexpected flavor combinations. If you're a purist, maybe try something else, but if you're feeling daring, it might just surprise you! Another highlight for me was the XO CHEUNG FUN. The soft, chewy rolled rice noodles perfectly soaked up that rich XO sauce, making each bite incredibly flavorful. Served with bean sprouts and chives, it’s a comforting yet sophisticated noodle dish you won't want to miss. For shrimp lovers, the HUP TO HA is a strong contender. The shrimp are incredibly juicy, and if you're a fan of a good honey kewpie mayo, you'll be in heaven. Paired with candied walnuts, broccoli, and orange segments, it’s a delightful sweet and savory combination that adds a bright contrast to the meal. And then there’s the BAK CHEET GAI, the cold poached chicken. This dish, visually stunning with its generous topping of green chili ginger scallion and cilantro, is a classic. While the chicken itself was tender, I personally felt it could use a little more of that vibrant sauce to really make it pop. But it's a solid choice if you're looking for something light and refreshing. Beyond the food, the atmosphere at Bonnie's is definitely part of the experience. The interesting lighting and the 'backyard vibe' offer a cool backdrop, and even the bathroom is noted for its fun design! Service was good – nothing over the top, but efficient and pleasant, ensuring a smooth dining experience. Dining at Bonnie's is about exploring modern Chinese-American cuisine through a Michelin lens. Don't be afraid to ask your server for recommendations, especially if you're unsure about stepping outside your comfort zone. Whether you're a Michelin enthusiast or just looking for some of the 'most delicious food' in NYC, Bonnie's offers a memorable culinary adventure. It's a place where traditional flavors get a creative reboot, making each dish feel like a discovery.
