And honestly, it’s even better when paired with a fresh bowl of fluffy white rice. What Exactly is Tofu Sisig? For those unfamiliar, traditional Sisig is a beloved Filipino dish typically made from parts of a pig's head, usually chopped and seasoned with calamansi (or lime), soy sauce, chili peppers, and onions. It’s often served on a sizzling plate. Tofu Sisig takes all those incredible flavors and textures but uses firm or extra-firm tofu as the star. The result is a plant-based dish that’s incredibly satisfying, mimicking the chewiness and richness of the original, while being healthier and vegetarian-friendly. It’s truly a testament to how creative Filipino cuisine can be! Why Tofu Sisig and Rice Are a Match Made in Heaven Honestly, I can't imagine Tofu Sisig without a side of rice. The rich, tangy, and slightly spicy flavors of the sisig perfectly complement the plain, comforting starchiness of the rice. The rice acts as a delicious canvas, soaking up all the amazing sauces and spices, making every bite a burst of flavor. Plus, the different textures – crispy tofu, crunchy onions, and soft rice – create a delightful experience. It’s the kind of meal that just warms your soul and truly fills you up without feeling heavy. Getting Started: My Simple Tofu Sisig Recipe Making Tofu Sisig might sound intimidating, but it's surprisingly simple. Here’s a basic breakdown of how I typically prepare it: Ingredients You'll Need (Approximate for 2-3 servings): 1 block (around 14-16 oz) extra-firm tofu, pressed and cubed 1 large onion, finely chopped 2-3 green chilies (siling labuyo or serrano), minced (adjust to your spice preference) 3-4 cloves garlic, minced 2-3 tbsp soy sauce Juice of 1-2 calamansi or lime 1-2 tbsp vegan mayonnaise (optional, for creaminess) 1 tbsp cooking oil Salt and pepper to taste Cooked rice for serving Optional garnishes: chopped spring onions, extra calamansi wedges, a fried egg (if not strictly vegan) My Steps to Deliciousness: Prep the Tofu: The key to good Tofu Sisig is crispy tofu! After pressing out as much water as possible, cube the tofu into small, bite-sized pieces. You can either pan-fry them until golden brown and crispy, air-fry them, or bake them.
