Hypermobility and flexibility are two different things! ❤️‍🩹 they are not one in the same.

2/12 Edited to

... Read moreMany people make the mistake of equating hypermobility with just being flexible or bendy, but from personal experience, I’ve learned they’re not the same at all. Hypermobility is actually a condition where joints can move beyond the normal range expected for a particular joint. This isn’t just about being flexible for activities like yoga or gymnastics; it can also mean the joints are looser or less stable than average. In my own journey, I noticed that while I could easily touch my toes and perform splits that many found impressive, I also experienced discomfort and occasional joint pain, especially after prolonged standing or physical activity. This led me to understand that hypermobility can sometimes accompany challenges like joint instability or increased risk of injury. It’s important to differentiate because flexibility training aims to improve muscle length and joint range within a safe limit, promoting strength and injury prevention. On the other hand, if someone is hypermobile, they might need to focus more on strengthening the muscles around the joints to improve stability and reduce issues like pain or dislocations. Additionally, hypermobility sometimes goes unnoticed or misunderstood simply because people assume 'being bendy' is always a good thing. However, without proper care and awareness, hypermobile joints can lead to problems such as early arthritis, joint clicking, or fatigue. For those who discover they are hypermobile, consulting with a healthcare professional, like a physical therapist, can provide guidance on exercises tailored to protect and support the joints. Understanding the distinction helped me modify my fitness routine to include stability exercises and mindful movement, which dramatically reduced my discomfort. This experience highlights the importance of recognizing that hypermobility is much more than just 'doing' flexible poses—it involves understanding your body’s unique needs and how to care for it effectively.
