SSH Grad Gabriel’s Next Chapter as PE Teacher!

SSH alumnus, Gabriel Chan, has just graduated from the National Institute of Education with a Bachelor of Science in Sport Science and Education (BSc. Ed) and will be starting his next chapter this July as a PE Teacher! 👏

His path wasn’t a straightforward one. Despite receiving an offer to study Physiotherapy, Gabriel chose to pursue teaching after being awarded the MOE Teaching Award.

“It was my heart cry to become a teacher!” ❤️

Beyond the classroom, Gabriel continues to chase his passion for floorball—representing Singapore on the National Floorball Team and coaching young athletes since 2019. 🇸🇬🏑

From athlete to educator, Gabriel is proving that when passion meets purpose, amazing things happen. We can’t wait to see the #GreaterImpact he’ll make on the next generation! 🌟

... Read moreGabriel Chan’s story is a compelling example of how following one’s passion can lead to a rewarding career—especially in the field of physical education. Having represented Singapore on the National Floorball Team, Gabriel not only excelled as an athlete but also embraced the role of a mentor by coaching young players since 2019. This dual experience of competing internationally and nurturing young talent adds immense value to his teaching approach. Choosing to study Sport Science and Education after receiving the MOE Teaching Award showcases Gabriel’s dedication to making a meaningful impact beyond personal achievements. His decision to forego physiotherapy—a path often favored for its clinical prestige—to pursue education demonstrates a heartfelt commitment to empowering the next generation through sports and physical health. In my own experience volunteering in youth sports coaching, I've seen firsthand how educators with real athletic backgrounds inspire students more effectively. Gabriel’s journey highlights the powerful connection between passion and profession, which resonates deeply with students and motivates them to embrace active, healthy lifestyles. Physical education teachers like Gabriel play a crucial role beyond teaching sports skills; they foster teamwork, resilience, and discipline. His story reminds us that educators who are also athletes bring practical insights that enrich their teaching and inspire students to pursue their own passions. For anyone contemplating their career path, Gabriel’s journey underlines the importance of aligning work with what truly moves you. His life embodies the idea that pursuing what you love—whether it’s sport, teaching, or both—creates opportunities for growth, impact, and personal fulfillment. As Gabriel steps into his new role this July, his blend of academic preparation and athletic experience promises to create a lasting #GreaterImpact in physical education, shaping not only young athletes but well-rounded individuals.
